?The goal of our Homes with Hearts foster care program is to nurture or rehabilitate as many pets as possible so they can be adopted by loving families,? said Theresa Geary, vice president of operations. ?We?re always in need of foster volunteers, as we see thousands of cats, dogs, and other small pets enter our shelters each year.?

Those attending the open house will have the opportunity to speak with foster-care volunteers and staff members, tour the shelter and meet some of the pets in need of foster homes. They also will learn about the benefits of fostering.

Foster volunteers provide temporary care for animals in their home?whether it is for a few weeks or months?until they are ready for adoption or space is available at one of the two shelters. The League established the foster care program 24 years ago. Last year alone, more than 350 volunteers provided foster care for a total of 2,841 needy pets.

?Foster volunteers play such an important role at the Dumb Friends League,? said Geary. ?They open up their homes and their hearts?whether it?s for two weeks or two months?and help give these pets second chances at finding happiness.?

Volunteer foster parents are provided with all of the needed supplies, including food, bedding, toys, cat litter and veterinary care if needed. The League also works with each volunteer?s schedule and needs.

Pets needing foster care include kittens and puppies that are too young for adoption, as well as mother cats and dogs nursing their litters, those recovering from an illness or injury and those that would benefit from extra socialization. The Dumb Friends League also utilizes foster parents to help provide needed space at the shelters for incoming animals.

Interested foster-care volunteers do not need to RSVP for the open house scheduled for Sept. 25, which will take place in Lulu?s classroom at the League?s Quebec Street shelter.
