New York ? Alexander Wang's latest collection, shown Saturday Sept. 10, in New York, was also his latest to grapple with his long-running obsessions - how mix athletic sports into chic fashion.
For spring 2012, Wang's response is that when the going gets tough the chic seek protection. This was cool warrior gal chic at its best, yet because Wang is such a smart designer he managed to infuse his sporty aesthetic with a courtly sensibility.
His opening quintet of looks in technical polo and mesh - composed of bomber laser cut jackets, tight shorts and mini skirts - had street credibility, a pages silhouette and an into battle attitude. Though the designer's most bravura moments were warrior biker ensembles - lean motorbike pants, hoodie jackets and even a crash helmet - all made in abstract botanical print.
"Dangerous sports, BMX bikes, skate boarding and protective gear" were some of the influences that inspired this collection, Wang said post show and he received scores of compliments.
Staged in Pier 54, an immense warehouse on the Hudson River, the show reached a climax with a series of leggings and jackets for track in intarsia knit that recalled computer game heroines, and managed to be militant yet feminine at the same time.
Worn by a casting of considerably quirky beauty, and staging artfully in large open setting dissected by giant mirrors, this collection was a bold fashion statement from a pretty unique designer.
