?Capitalism,? wrote the environmental economist K. William Kapp, ?must be regarded as an economy of unpaid costs, ?unpaid? in so far as a substantial portion of the actual costs of production remain unaccounted for in entrepreneurial outlays; instead they are shifted to, and ultimately borne by, third persons or by the community as a whole.?
Documentation in a new report from the U.S. conservation group River Network provides yet another confirmation of this truth. The authors show that coal, nuclear and natural gas power plants use more fresh water than any other economic sector, including agriculture. There are low-water alternatives, but the utilities aren?t using them.
In the authors? words, ?Electricity?as we generate it today?depends heavily on access to free water.? What they call ?free? is what Kapp called ?unpaid costs.? Power company profits depend on making society and nature pay those costs.

It takes water to produce electricity.
As many Americans retreat to air-conditioned environments to get out of the heat, the flame increases under our limited freshwater resources. The electrical energy used to create our comfort zones requires massive withdrawals of water from our rivers, lakes and aquifers to cool down nuclear, coal and natural gas power plants.
Some of this water is evaporated while the majority of this water is warmed up?causing thermal pollution?killing aquatic life, increasing toxic algae blooms and decreasing the sustainability of our water supplies.
Thermoelectric energy (including coal, nuclear and natural gas) is the fastest growing use of freshwater resources in the country. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that 53% of all of the fresh, surface water withdrawn from the environment for human use in 2005 went to operating our thirsty electrical grid. Water behind dams is not included in USGS numbers.
So, while all other sectors of society are reducing per capita water use and overall water diversion rates, the electrical industry is just getting started.
This report is a snapshot of the current water impacts of electrical production and an introduction to the choices we face as a nation trying to sustain water and energy in a warming world. Many watersheds in the United States are already running out of water to burn?especially in the Southeast, the Great Lakes and in many parts of the West.
Over the last several years, Georgia has experienced water stress because Georgia Power?s two nuclear plants require more water than all of the water consumed by residents of downtown Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah combined.
In 2011, the Union of Concerned Scientists reported that, in at least 120 vulnerable watersheds across the U.S., power plants are a factor contributing to water stress.
As a nation, we have ?water-friendly? energy options. Energy efficiency and water conservation programs are crucial strategies that can help protect our waterways from the impacts of electricity production. Expanding the deployment of wind energy and photovoltaic solar power could vastly reduce wateruse conflicts in some regions.
And we must change the technologies we use in existing power plants. Energy companies could conserve more water by modernizing ?once-through? cooling systems than could be saved by all of our nation?s residential water conservation programs combined.
But instead of moving towards greater water efficiency and use of renewables, we are trending towards an electrical grid that uses more water and is less reliable. Without stronger federal water use standards, thermoelectric plants may continue using water-intensive cooling technologies.
At the same time, water uncertainty is causing cities to explore new water sources such as desalinization, deeper wells and longer pipelines?all of which would increase electrical use. Across the country ?non-conventional? drilling for natural gas has raised concerns about water quality. In Colorado, natural gas ?fracking? operations have actually begun to compete with farmers for water.
The water footprint of coal-fired power plants will only increase with new carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies.
Based on the available published water-use information, we calculate that in 2009 the water footprint WF of U.S. electricity was approximately 42 gallons per kilowatt hour (kWh) produced. An average U.S. household?s monthly energy use (weighted by cooling technology and fuel mix) requires 39,829 gallons of water, or five times more than the direct residential water use of that same household. This estimate does not include major portions of the lifecycle of electrical production for which we could not find documentation.
As the world?s largest electrical consumer, the U.S. needs to consider the sustainability of this course before investing in more water-intensive electrical infrastructure.
Today, our thirsty electric grid carries pollutants into our rivers and causes algae-blooms and fish kills. But, there are other paths.
According to our calculations, eliminating ?once-through? cooling?by itself? could reduce the water footprint of thermoelectricity by more than two-thirds.
Increasing wind and PV solar energy to 40% of the grid would have a similar effect and reduce consumptive water use by 11%.
Taken together, these two actions could reduce the water footprint of thermoelectricity by 82% and consumptive water use by 27%.
While there are site-specific limitations and trade-offs to consider, our society stands to benefit from a wider discussion of how water saved in the energy sector might be used to meet future needs, grow food or restore fisheries and water quality.

Wash Your Hands: Infants have a weak immune system and so, they are likely to catch an infection quickly. As you enter the hospital room or home, you should first wash your hands. Use a sanitizer before holding the baby. This reduces the chances of the baby being exposed to germs.
Avoid Using Strong Perfume: Use of a synthetic perfume may prove to be irritating for the newborn, so avoid using it. The skin of an infant is very sensitive. The bodily systems are weak and the baby may develop health problems when exposed to unnatural chemicals.
Bring Something to Eat: The new mom and dad are already drained and you should not expect to be fed. Instead, you should bring some healthy and homemade food for them. The new mom may not have asked for any help, but you know that she needs nutritious food and rest. You may bring salad, banana cupcakes, fruity yogurt, a tray of whole wheat pasta, lasagna or enchiladas, porridge (they can heat up later), dry fruits, fresh berries and fruits, cheese and crackers, etc. Food served in the hospital is not always tasty. FDA probes safety issues with metal hip implants
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Metal hip replacements implanted in a half-million Americans may be failing earlier than expected, but it could be years before U.S. health regulators have a clear picture of the scope of the problem.
The Food and Drug Administration holds a two-day meeting starting Wednesday to scrutinize the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants, following years of patient reports of pain and swelling that sometimes requires removal of the devices. It is a challenging, but familiar, predicament for the FDA: reviewing the safety of a device that was expected to be superior, but which may actually be more dangerous than what came before.
For decades nearly all orthopedic implants were made from plastic or ceramic. But in the last 10 years some surgeons began to favor implants made with metal stems and sockets. Laboratory tests suggested the devices would be more resistant to wear and reduce the chances of dislocation.
But recent data gathered by surgeons in the U.K. appears to show just the opposite.
In March, British experts at the world's largest artificial joint registry told doctors to stop using metal-on-metal hip replacements, citing an analysis showing they have to be replaced more often than other implants. Hip replacements are supposed to last between 10 to 15 years, but more than 6 percent of patients with metal hips needed them replaced after less than five years. That compared with just 2 percent of people who had ceramic or plastic joints. Both types of devices are prescribed for people suffering hip pain and limited movement due to arthritis or injury.
British regulators now recommend that people who have the implants get yearly blood tests to make sure no dangerous metals are seeping into their bodies as the components rub against each other.
U.S. regulators have not made any similar recommendations for the estimated 500,000 American patients who have received the devices.
FDA scientists say they want to consider all available information before making their recommendations ? not just the data from the U.K.
"Why look at a single registry when there's data from around the world?" said Dr. William Maisel, FDA's chief scientist for medical devices, in an interview with the Associated Press. "This is an opportunity for us to look at all the available information so that we can have a thoughtful conversation about what clinical recommendations can be made."
Maisel said the FDA is working to combine data from foreign countries and the U.S. to determine which groups of patients and implants are most problematic. On Wednesday and Thursday the FDA will ask a panel of experts to recommend the best practices for monitoring patients with the devices. Panelists will consider blood tests, medical imaging and laboratory tests.
But some U.S. orthopedic specialists say they have already reached their own conclusions about metal hips.
"In my personal opinion there is very little room, if any, for metal-on-metal implants because the alternatives we have on the market are likely safer and as effective," said Dr. Art Sedrakyan, professor of public health at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
The FDA's deliberative approach to tackling the hip implant issue is in some ways a necessity. Unlike other countries, the U.S. has no national registry to track the performance of implants over time.
The FDA has received 16,800 event reports about metal hips between 2000 and 2011, but regulators stress that number is not very useful. Many doctors do not report problems to the FDA, and the volume of reports is influenced by news reports on safety issues.
A registry set up by Minnesota's HealthEast Care System recorded four times as many replacement surgeries for patients with metal-on-metal hips as those with other implant types. However, a similar registry set up by health care provider Kaiser Permanente found no difference between the two groups.
With little definitive data on U.S. hip implants, the agency has asked manufacturers like Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer Holdings Inc. and Biomet Inc. to conduct long-term, follow-up studies of more than 100 metal-on-metal hips on the U.S. market.
FDA scientists say the studies will help "fill in the blanks" on a number of scientific questions, including the effects of metal particles that often seep into the bloodstream as the implants wear down.
But Sedrakyan and others say it could be a decade or more before that information is available. In a commentary published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, Sedrakyan and two co-authors pointed out those studies must run at least eight years to return the information FDA is seeking. Based on the authors' analysis of FDA records, the FDA has reached agreements on the design of less than 25 percent of the studies, and it's unclear whether any of the studies have actually begun. The FDA notified the companies last May.
The prospect of safety findings arriving in eight or 10 years is little comfort to patients like Mary Weaver, 48, who had both hips replaced with a metal implant from Johnson & Johnson in 2007 and 2008. J&J recalled the ASR hip replacement in 2010, after reports that it was failing in some patients after only a few years after implantation.
Due to increasing pain and elevated metal levels in her blood, Weaver had both implants removed in 2011. She was let go from her job due to the time needed to undergo both surgeries, and is currently unemployed.
"I hope that no one has to go through this ? it's frustrating, it's emotionally draining," said Weaver, who lives in Mt. Jackson, Va. "It's not just hard on you, it's hard on your whole family because your quality of life is not what it used to be."
Like 90 percent of medical devices sold in the U.S., most metal-on-metal hips were approved via the FDA's fast track program for medical devices. Under the so-called 510k system, the agency waives clinical testing requirements for devices which appear similar to others already in use. Since plastic and ceramic hip replacements had been on the market since the 1950s, most metal hip replacements were approved without new clinical testing.
"I am so furious they would use my wife as a lab rat, along with the other 500,000 people who don't have a clue what is happening," said Dwight Schrag, 69, of Bellevue, Wash. Schrag's wife Mary received J&J's ASR hip in 2006 and had it removed due to pain and other side effects in 2010. Schrag is one of a number of public speakers who have signed up to speak at the FDA meeting.
It's not the first time the FDA's fast-track program for clearing devices has come under fire.
Last summer the Institute of Medicine said in a report that the FDA should abandon the 35-year-old system because it provides little assurance that the implants are actually safe. The Institute is composed of medical experts who advise the federal government.
Although the FDA itself requested the report from the Institute, agency officials rejected the group's conclusions, saying the 510k system works well for the vast majority of devices.

Islamist Morsi says will be leader for all Egyptians
Egypt's Mohamed Morsi, the first Islamist to be elected president of the Arab world's most populous nation, said Sunday he will be a leader "for all Egyptians" and called for national unity after a polarising race.
Morsi, the country's first elected leader since a popular uprising ousted president Hosni Mubarak, won 51.73 percent of the vote against ex-premier Ahmed Shafiq.
"I will be a president for all Egyptians," Morsi said just hours after he was declared the winner.
"I call on you, great people of Egypt ... to strengthen our national unity," he said, adding that national unity "is the only way out of these difficult times".
Morsi, who resigned from the Muslim Brotherhood to take the top job, thanked the "martyrs" of the uprising for the victory and stressed that "the revolution continues".
The 60-year-old engineer also vowed to honour international treaties.
"We will preserve all international treaties and charters ... we come in peace," Morsi said.
Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel, in 1979.
The election comes after 18 months of a tumultuous military-led transition from Mubarak's rule, marked by political upheaval and bloodshed.
"The winner of the election for Egyptian president on June 16-17 is Mohamed Morsi Eissa al-Ayat," said the head of the electoral commission, Faruq Sultan earlier.
The announcement saw hundreds of thousands of Morsi supporters erupt in celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, waving flags and posters of the Islamist leader, who was jailed during the uprising that overthrew Mubarak early last year.
"God is greatest" and "down with military rule" they chanted, as fireworks went off over the square.
Across Cairo, cars sounded their horns and chants of "Morsi, Morsi" were heard.
Losing candidate Shafiq, who was widely perceived as the military's candidate, joined the country's military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi in congratulating Morsi.
"General Ahmed Shafiq sent a message to Mohamed Morsi congratulating him on his victory," the official MENA news agency reported. Earlier state television said Tantawi had congratulated Morsi.
Morsi won with 13,230,131 votes against Shafiq's 12,347,380, Sultan said. The election, in which more than 50 million voters were eligible to cast their ballot, saw a 51.8 percent turnout.
Morsi resigned from his posts in the Muslim Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party, which he headed, after he was declared the winner, the Brotherhood announced.
And the interim head of the Coptic Church, many of whose faithful have feared the rise of Islamists, also congratulated Morsi.
Shafiq supporters who had gathered to hear the result with his campaign team in the suburbs of Cairo were devastated by the result.
Some women screamed and others cried as several men held their heads between their hands in despair.
"It's a very sad day for Egypt. I don't think Morsi is the winner. I'm very sad that Egypt will be represented by this man and this group," Shafiq supporter Maged told AFP.
The capital was tense before the announcement, with the city's notoriously busy streets deserted and shops and schools closed.
Extra troops and police were deployed as military helicopters flew overhead.
The road to parliament was closed to traffic, and security was tightened around vital establishments as Egyptians waited nervously for the result.
The election has polarised the nation, dividing those who feared a return to the old regime under Shafiq from others who wanted to keep religion out of politics and who fear the Brotherhood would stifle personal freedoms.
Shafiq ran on a strong law-and-order platform, pledging to restore security and stability. He is himself a retired general, but as a Mubarak-era minister he is reviled by the activists who spearheaded the 2011 revolt.
President-elect Morsi was the Islamists' fallback representative after their deputy leader Khairat El-Shater was disqualified.
In campaigning he sought to allay the fears of secular groups and the sizeable Coptic Christian minority by promising a diverse and inclusive political system.
Both Morsi and Shafiq had claimed victory in the election for a successor to Mubarak, and tensions heightened after the electoral commission delayed announcing the official outcome.
The delay in announcing the result of the June 16-17 run-off, initially scheduled for Thursday, had raised suspicions that the outcome of the election was being negotiated rather than counted.
On Friday, the SCAF warned it would deal "with utmost firmness and strength" with any attempts to harm public interests.
The Brotherhood warned against tampering with the election results, but also said it had no intention of instigating violence.
It has rejected a constitutional declaration by the military that strips away any gains made by the Islamist group since the popular uprising which forced Mubarak to stand down in February last year.
The document dissolves the Islamist-led parliament and gives the army a broad say in government policy and control over the new constitution. It was adopted just days after a justice ministry decree granted the army powers of arrest.

Kenya protests US terror advisory for Mombasa
MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) ? The Kenyan government is protesting a U.S. embassy travel advisory that warned of an imminent terror attack on the coastal town of Mombasa, saying the advisory amounts to "economic sabotage" in a city that is reliant on tourism.
In a joint statement on Sunday, Head of Public Service Francis Kimemia and Tourism Minister Dan Mwadzo said the Kenyan government had officially asked the U.S. embassy in Nairobi to lift Friday's advisory.
The officials say the terror alert hurts Kenya's massive tourism industry. Mombasa is a major destination for foreign visitors.

'American Idol' Finalist Jessica Sanchez Headed To 'Glee'

As if there weren't already enough excitement surrounding the slightly restructured fourth season of "Glee," with the characters' story lines picking up after high school, word on the street is that an "American Idol" finalist will be joining the cast in the fall.
According to TV Line, 16-year-old phenom Jessica Sanchez is in final negotiations to join Rachel, Finn, Mr. Schu and the rest of the "Glee" gang for a multi-episode arc. There is no word on what specific role Sanchez will play, or whether she'll be part of McKinley High's National Championship-winning New Directions or will surface in the form of competition at another school.
Because of Sanchez's previous commitments to the summer "Idol" tour, she won't be able to appear on the hit series until closer to the halfway mark of season four. If and when Sanchez's stint on the show is officially announced, the California native will join an illustrious list of famous "Glee" guest stars: Gwyneth Paltrow, Britney Spears, Neil Patrick Harris, Lindsay Lohan and international pop star Charice.
In addition to juggling her responsibilities on the "Idol" tour and the potential gig on "Glee," the pint-sized powerhouse is also hard at work on her first solo album, which she hopes has more of an urban sound.
"I don't want people to just hand me music and be like, 'Here, you sound good on this. Sing it.' I want to be able to say, 'This is me,' " Sanchez told MTV News recently, adding that she has high hopes for some A-list contributors on the album.
"This is going to seem odd, but I love Eminem, because he has so much conviction and emotion in the way he raps; every word that he raps, you feel it," she said. "And I think our talents would mesh. So, hopefully, it could happen, and I would just die if he'd collaborate with me!"

The scientists investigated?Shackleton Crater, which sits almost directly on the moon's south pole. The crater, named after the Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, is more than 12 miles wide (19 kilometers) and 2 miles deep (3 km) ? about as deep as Earth's oceans.
The interiors of polar craters on?the moon?are in nearly perpetual darkness, making them cold traps that researchers have long suspected might be home to vast amounts of frozen water and thus key candidates for human exploration. However, previous orbital and Earth-based observations of lunar craters have yielded conflicting interpretations over whether ice is there.
For instance, the Japanese spacecraft Kaguya saw no discernible signs of ice within Shackleton Crater, but NASA's LCROSS probe analyzed Cabeus Crater near the moon's south pole and found it measured as much as 5 percent water by mass. [Photos: Searching for Water on the Moon]
Now scientists who have mapped Shackleton Crater with unprecedented detail have found evidence of ice inside the crater.
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter essentially illuminated the crater's interior with infrared laser light, measuring how reflective it was. The crater's floor is more reflective than that of other nearby craters, suggesting it had ice.
"Water ice in amounts of up to 20 percent is a viable possibility," study lead author Maria Zuber, a geophysicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told SPACE.com.
Don't get your hopes up, though. The amount of?ice in Shackleton Crater?"can also be much less, conceivably as little as zero," Zuber cautioned.
This uncertainty is due in part to what the researchers saw in the rest of the crater. Bizarrely, while the crater's floor was relatively bright, Zuber and her colleagues observed that its walls were even more reflective.
Scientists had thought that if highly reflective ice were anywhere in a crater, it would be on the floor, which live in nearly permanent darkness. In comparison, the walls of Shackleton Crater occasionally see daylight, which should evaporate any ice that accumulates.
The researchers think the reflectance of the crater's walls is due not to ice, but to quakes. Every once in a while, the moon experiences shaking brought on by meteor collisions or the pull of the Earth. These "moonquakes" may have caused Shackleton's walls to slough off older, darker soil, revealing newer, brighter soil underneath.
Whether or not the crater floor is brightly reflective due to ice or other factors is also open to question.
"The reflectance could be indicative of something else in addition to or other than water ice," Zuber said. For instance, the crater floor might be reflective because it could have had relatively little exposure to solar and cosmic radiation that would have darkened it.
Zuber noted that the measurements only look at a micron-thick portion of Shackleton Crater's uppermost layer. "A bigger question is how much water might be buried at depth," Zuber said, adding that NASA's GRAIL mission will investigate that possibility.
The researchers also used the orbiter to map the crater's floor and the slope of its walls. This topographic map will help shed light on crater formation and study other?uncharted areas of the moon.
"We would like to study other lunar polar craters in comparable detail," Zuber said. "There is much to be learned here."
The scientists detailed their findings in the June 21 issue of the journal Nature.

Massachusetts mortgage activity on the rise thanks to refinancing ...
The real estate tracking firm the Warren Group is at it again, reporting that total Massachusetts mortgage activity has increased more than 28 percent for this year compared to the same period last year. Although home sales have added to the increase, the real news in the increased numbers is the refinance mortgage activity, according to the group's CEO, Timothy Warren.
The historically low interest rates along with the revised federal program called the Home Affordable Refinance Program, or HARP, have led more homeowners to refinance into lower mortgage payments. In fact, the numbers speak for themselves; so far this year, 86 percent of all mortgages were refinances, up from 84.5 percent for this time last year. Refinanced mortgages increased 32 percent over last year for a total of 85,721.
And mortgages generated through the purchase of a home rose almost 13 percent for the first four months of this year. Overall, pending home sales have increased for 13 months straight, which is good news for the Massachusetts housing market. Although many homeowners may find the refinancing game rather tricky in today's tough lending environments, these figures do show it is possible to refinance your mortgage.
Restrictions abound in the federal and state programs available to struggling homeowners however, and understanding the qualifications and requirements for the various mortgage products can be difficult for many.
