26 militants, 10 soldiers killed in Yemen fighting

A new round of fierce fighting in southern Yemen killed 10 soldiers and 26 militants, military officials said Monday, the latest battle in a government campaign to retake territory from al-Qaida-linked fighters, .

Another 38 militants and about 30 soldiers were wounded in the clashes that took place near the city of Dufas in the southern province of Abyan, they said.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations, said the fighting took place over the past 24 hours. Among the military dead was a colonel.

The U.S. and other Western powers have looked on with concern as al-Qaida gains a strong foothold in southern Yemen. The U.S. considers the Yemen spur of al-Qaida as one of the most active in worldwide terror. The "Christmas bomber" who tried to detonate explosives hidden in his underwear on a plane as it landed in Detroit in December 2009 was said to have been trained in Yemen.

Yemen has been wracked by internal conflict for months over popular protests demanding the resignation of longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The al-Qaida militants have taken advantage of that to take control of several towns and districts in the southern part of the country.

Saleh is still in Saudi Arabia, recovering from severe wounds suffered in a June attack on his palace but refusing to resign despite heavy international pressure, leaving the nation in political limbo. Even so, the Yemeni military has stepped up its attacks against the Islamist militants in recent weeks, killing dozens.

The largest battle over the past day erupted when militants intercepted government troops advancing on Dufas, with dozens of casualties on both sides.

Dufas is just west of Abyan's provincial capital of Zinjibar, where militants have driven out tens of thousands of residents. They have taken refuge in nearby cities.

Officials said warplanes attacked militant bases late Monday afternoon in areas around Zinjibar.

Also, military officials said army units were advancing toward militant positions in al-Mutalaa, eight miles (13 kilometers) from Zinjibar.

Mohammed Nasser, a resident of al-Code, a town near Zinjibar, said the military was bombing the area heavily, setting fire to militants' vehicles and equipment.

"Did You Beat Cancer?" they want to know | Care2 Healthy Living

Living with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
(#19 in a series)

You never know what?s going to happen when you find a lump in your breast. You hope it?s inconsequential because most breast lumps are. Mine turned out to be triple-negative breast cancer.

Throughout months of treatment, I remained fairly healthy, if that?s the right word for someone with multiple sclerosis and cancer. I didn?t have so much as the common cold and, aside from a few afternoon naps, never took to my bed. Oh, there were lots of symptoms and side effects, but it could have been a whole lot worse. Looking back on the last ten months, it?s hard to believe I?m on the other side of it all.

I survived finding a breast lump, informing my husband, having a mammogram, an ultrasound, a double biopsy, and the shocking diagnosis of a fast growing, very aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. I survived informing the rest of my family by long-distance.

I survived a mastectomy, the drain, the stitches, and the physical and emotional healing of losing a breast.

I survived 16 rounds of chemotherapy over six and a half months, along with the accompanying side effects, and a chemo port. I survived delays and disappointments due to poor blood work and a need to rest my tired body before slamming it again. I survived the waiting, the doctor appointments, the decision-making, and the stranger in the mirror.

I survived 30 radiation treatments, five days a week for six weeks, during the peak of summer.

I survived the haunting stories of my fellow cancer patients, and sensed the anguish behind their smiles.

I survived watching my husband bravely carry unspoken burdens on his strong shoulders. I survived because this husband and wife team is outrageously stubborn and determined. We survive because we did not stop living after diagnosis, or surgery, or chemotherapy, or radiation, or weariness, and we will never stop living as long as we?re together. Our pleasures are simple and our needs are few, but they are ours to enjoy. We will survive and thrive, together, as long as we live.

The recurrence rate with aggressive triple-negative breast cancer is higher than that of other breast cancers, at least in the first three to five years, but I face these next years knowing that I?ve had a fine medical team and good treatment. No complaints. No regrets. Much to appreciate.

There are some follow-up tests and doctor visits already on my schedule, but I?m not obsessing about recurrence. I know the main warning signs and won?t hesitate to sound the alarm, should need be.

There are no drastic life changes in the works. I already was ? and still am ? grateful for each day that I?m alive. Like each of you reading these words, I have no idea how long I?ll be here.

So now people are asking if the treatment worked. ?Did you beat it?? they want to know. With all the doctors on my case, none of them has said, or will say, that I am cancer-free. But one and all have said that I should assume that I am ? and I do.

So did I beat the cancer? Whether or not some wayward cancer cells still lie in wait, the answer is yes. Without question.

the best way to decorate your home with one Chinese antiques ...

When my great mom perished, she still left me a stunning and also peculiar antique amethyst necklace, getting several picturesque reports. The particular amethyst necklace is the simply thing that is certainly pursuing our whole loved ones tale. It?s in your family for ages, as many antiques anklet bracelets tend to be, which is why it can be saved pertaining to children. This particular band range from ? old world ?, make up the region known as today Czech Republica.

This particular amethyst bracelets ended up being the only real beneficial issue the household experienced. Your ex diary has been spoken about this particular stunning and also useful amethyst bracelets, that the girl new mother once wore not until your woman has been inside. The particular nanna used to wear this for my child hand similar to this regarding nervous about loosing the idea or perhaps getting this taken simply by somebody elsewhere.

My own grandmother?s original reminiscences had been in regards to the sunlight showing inside a wonderful method for this classic bracelet?s amethyst. The girl mom ended up being using it whenever the lady ended up being rocking around the outdated creaking rocking seat; the household what food was in a new village 72 hours walk coming from Prague.

The odd along with beneficial vintage band returned further than that will, all the way to the marriage associated with my own fantastic great great grandmother. Your family had been loaded once, along with the classic amethyst band would be a wedding ceremony surprise for you to our ancestor by the royal battle each other.

The household am rich that they managed each half a new rich and abundant area. Our ancestor rode with pride over a horse, appreciating every one of the territory she owned or operated, this specific old-fashioned amethyst band staying among the girl lovely gems, adorning the girl toned, beautiful arms.

Though the abundant and large place your woman owned or operated had been producing a few next door neighbor battle to get it just about all. It would appear that the particular old-fashioned amethyst necklace was dropped for quite a while, during that awkward time. Fantastic website in connection with jewelry http://www.thejewelrydelivery.com. The family?s story carries an unhappy occasion, the actual way has been burned down, the family?s factors had been slain in support of several made it through. One of my personal forebears become preoccupied locating the classic amethyst bracelet, along with put in days and days excavating across the ruins to get it, prior to the important vintage amethyst bracelets return into my personal family?s ownership.

It absolutely was a dangerous actions, because the adversary has been attempting to find the heirs to place these to death. Our ancestor?s family members dropped the struggle now his or her property were overcome. The alternative loved ones pressured our ancestors to hide, for too long time. So, pressured with this horrible quest, that they become peasants, exactly like all others in those days. The gorgeous old-fashioned amethyst band continued to be being a gorgeous memory from the striking previous occasions, a gift and also a cherish.

VMA Expert Kreayshawn Excited To 'Harass Celebrities'

Sunday's Video Music Awards red-carpet host aces MTV News quiz.
By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi

Kreayshawn

Kreayshawn jokes that she didn't grow up with cable TV, but that didn't stop her from acing an MTV News Video Music Awards quiz.

The Bay Area rapper took part in our mock game show, and even impressed herself with how much she knew about past VMA performances.

She stumbled a bit over the first question — Who closed last year's Video Music Awards? — guessing David Bowie, Eminem and Birdman before coming up with the correct answer: a red-suit-wearing Kanye West.

She also scored correct guesses when she answered which song Britney Spears sang in her debut Video Music Awards performance ("... Baby One More Time") and what Madonna song Katy Perry sang ("Like a Virgin") when she fronted the house band one year.

Sounds like she'll do just fine come Sunday night, when she works the red carpet as a host for MTV.com. Others who've filled this role in past years include Coco Rocha, Christian Siriano and Adrienne Bailon.

"I'm super excited to be the red-carpet host at this year's VMAs," Kreayshawn said. "I can harass celebrities about what they're wearing, what they ate before they got to the carpet, all sorts of funny stuff."

The 21-year-old was featured on Saturday's (August 27) new episode of "When I Was 17" with other VMA Best New Artist nominees Big Sean and Tyler, the Creator.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

New discovery in the genetics of fibroids

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Uterine leiomyomas, also called fibroids, cause a very significant burden to women's health. They are benign tumors that occur in 60% of women by the age of 45 years and cause symptoms such as abdominal pain and discomfort, and abnormal bleeding, in about half of the cases. Fibroids are also an important cause of infertility. These tumors are the most common medical reason for hysterectomy.

Considering the clinical importance of fibroids, relatively little has been known about the mechanisms of tumorigenesis involved.

A research team at the University of Helsinki, Finland, set out to study the genetic structure of fibroids by determining the sequence of all the more than 20 000 human genes, in a series of 18 tumors. This, and further validation in over 200 fibroids, revealed very specific mutations in a gene called MED12, in as many of 70% of the studied tumors.

MED12 protein, the product of the MED12 gene, is known to play a role in regulation of general gene transcription. The observed pattern of mutations suggests that MED12 function is disrupted in a very specific manner in the majority of fibroids. The research will be published in the highly valued scientific journal Science.

That such a large proportion of fibroids display such specific mutations provides some hope that targeted therapies could in the future be designed based on the findings. As professor Lauri Aaltonen, the leader of the research team, comments: "This is a giant step towards understanding why fibroids arise, but towards design of targeted therapies it is a very early step. Let's hope that this journey has begun."

Morningstar, the busiest time for the parents

Parents all over the world would agree with me when I say that these are the busiest time of the day for us in the morning. However, if you have some plans ahead of time, I can assure you that you'll save a lot of time and still get it done.

Be the best option to try to do something the night before. This can be washing dishes, prepare lunch, pulling out the uniforms and other clothing, etc. Also, make sure that your children their things readyeven at night.

One thing that is very effective in saving the time is to bring healthy food for breakfast. They are put together quickly, saving you time and keeps children healthy. Cereals and other healthy ingredients such as fruit, dairy products, etc. would do the best job. These items are ready to eat, so removing about half an hour from the diary of life.

One suggestion that one should never lose is not dependent on the TV in the morning. This will ensure that your childrenprepare, and not just sit on the couch watching TV.

You can get them a chance to watch TV after you have brushed your teeth, they had their breakfast and got dressed.

The organization would be the best solution of all to follow, as the process fast final. You can separate all the elements according to their priorities, or you can have all the "kids stuff in a separate place.

Little things like hooks near the door tohang bags and coats at school, it would be wonderful to save time. In addition, there may be small bucket, where every child can save his / her small things such as ID cards, keys or changing rooms, etc.

All parents must do is to stay calm because you are the one to be in control of themselves, need to control the whole situation.

Colts' Painter tries to prove himself vs Packers (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Quarterback Curtis Painter will get one more chance to prove he can run the Colts offense Friday.

After that, it's anybody's guess.

The backup to Peyton Manning is expected to start against defending champion Green Bay, just two days after Indianapolis brought Kerry Collins out of retirement. Manning is still recovering from offseason neck surgery and may not be ready for the Sept. 11 season-opener at Houston.

Coach Jim Caldwell hasn't said whether Collins will play against the Packers. But Collins believes he needs extensive work with his new teammates before next week's preseason finale against Cincinnati.

The Packers defense may not be at full strength, either, but All-Pro linebacker Clay Matthews is expected to play despite a nagging hamstring injury.

Workplace drama can damage your home life

Getty Images stock

By Kimberly Hayes Taylor
msnbc.com contributor

When our colleagues don?t invite us to lunch, gossip about us, are condescending or otherwise rude to us at work, the impact can be so intense that we take our problems home, affecting our families and partners who in turn may also take the stress to their workplaces, a new Baylor University study reports.

?I didn?t expect to have such strong findings in this study. The research shows if we are treated poorly at work, we see the world as a less bright place and it?s hard to shake it off,? says study author Merideth Ferguson, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship at the Baylor University Hankamer School of Business whose research was published online in the Journal of Organizational Behavior. ?When this happens daily or chronically, it eats away at people?s self-esteem and they are less optimistic about their lives and the future.?

A stressed employee often shares work frustrations with their spouse or partner, and the partner feels desperate to fix it, Ferguson says. But that?s unrealistic, and the feelings of helplessness can build more stress. Additionally, she explains, the stressed and distracted worker may neglect family responsibilities and the ongoing issue also can affect marital satisfaction.

?This phenomenon jumps workplaces,? she says. ?It goes from the workplace to the home to another workplace.?

James Powell, 36, of Detroit, understands how deeply work incivility can impact a happy home. About five years ago, as he vied for an executive-level position at a national retailer, a co-worker competing for the same position spread rumors Powell was breaching company policy and shirking his duties. He became depressed when he couldn?t figure out how to stop the jokes and gossip.

?I was consumed with work; it was my life,? he says. ?I came home and complained about work every day. After a while, everybody -? my wife, sisters and the rest of my family got so tired of it, they started telling me to shut up. My wife was telling me to just quit and asking how I could let people treat me that way. It really affected her.?

He says his world came crashing down soon after a holiday party, where the co-worker and others teased his wife, saying she was too pretty to be with him. He says she internalized the stress and jokes, and their marriage started breaking down. As a result, she began missing work and having problems on her job. The couple separated and eventually divorced. He got the promotion, but the work problems remained so intense that he resigned his position.

?I?m still suffering from it,? he acknowledges.

Ferguson suggests employees facing work incivility contact the human resources department, seek help from an employee assistance program or get outside counseling to help manage work-related stress. She also advises finding ways to avoid taking the stress home.

?Counseling sometimes helps you keep from stressing your family,? she says. ?Exercise, go out with friends who are not co-workers, then go home to your family and be relaxed. It?s a trial and error thing; you have to find what works for you.?
Unfortunately, says Ferguson, who is working on a similar study on supervisor abuse, being treated poorly at work may lead to a decision to cut ties with your employer.

?You may have to consider when it?s time to leave,? she says. ?If the culture on your job supports incivility, it doesn?t help to go to HR.?

Silicon Valley on Apple post-Jobs: success for now

(AP) ? Apple headquarters is still standing in this leafy Silicon Valley suburb even after Steve Jobs' industry-rattling announcement that he was resigning as chief executive of the company he co-founded in a garage more than three decades ago.

That news comes as little surprise in the Valley, where few doubted Thursday that despite the loss of its legendary leader Apple would continue to succeed ? at least for the next few years.

"I don't think in the short term it will suffer," said Ethan Salter, 35, an engineering consultant who had stopped in at a Starbucks just down the road from the Mountain View headquarters of Google Inc., a major Apple competitor. "In the long term, things change really quickly around here."

Tech workers interviewed by The Associated Press said they were not shocked to hear Wednesday that Jobs was stepping down. His health troubles, which have included pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant, are well known.

Yet in a place where the lightning speed of success is matched perhaps only by the careening pace of failure, some wondered whether Jobs' departure could ultimately lead to a turn in its fortunes.

Apple itself floundered for a decade after Jobs left the company, and its rise to its current success did not begin until he returned in the late 1990s, cementing his image as the key to the company's success.

"Last time he left Apple, it wasn't so pretty," said Aaron Wegner, 31, a computer programmer at Lawrence Livermore National Lab in Silicon Valley for the day.

"I think he's a driving force behind what their products end up physically looking like."

Jobs' reputation as a micromanager of Apple's design process has both helped and hindered the company. The company's string of successes over the past decade has convinced many consumers and investors that with Jobs in charge the company couldn't fail. The flip side of that confidence is an anxiety about whether the company will falter without him.

Mi Young, 43, a business operations manager at a small computer networking company in Santa Clara, said she doubts Jobs would have stepped down without a plan in place.

Many of the ideas to come out of Apple in the next five years she believes will still bear Jobs' stamp. "Beyond that, I don't know who will be able to fill those shoes."

Part of the concern among Apple fans hinges on how heavily the company itself has relied on Jobs' cult of personality to market its innovative products.

His onstage appearances to unveil Apple's newest designs draw thousands of adoring fans and hundreds of journalists who broadcast his every word around the globe.

"There's this identification of the company with the man," said Alex Bochannek, curator at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. That kind of identification is not unique to Apple in the history of computer companies and leads to the assumption that these large, complex organizations are run singlehandedly, he said.

But Jobs has clearly surrounded himself with smart people, Bochannek said, such as lead designer Jonathan Ive, best known to the public as the stylish Brit who extolls Apple's latest products in the company's online marketing videos.

"I don't think anyone thinks Apple is going away tomorrow," he said. At the same time, he said, "ultimately it's the leader who creates a culture."

While Apple's focus on attractive design and ease of use has fostered a culture of innovation, heavy secrecy is also a cornerstone of its operations.

The veil the company drapes over its inner workings encourages a furious online trade in speculation and rumors about Apple and its products.

Outside the company's Cupertino headquarters Thursday, Apple employees were unsurprisingly tight-lipped about their boss' decision, saying they're under strict orders not to talk to reporters.

"It's called job security," one employee said.

Jobs' replacement as CEO is Tim Cook, a longtime Apple executive who has temporarily filled the spot when Jobs has gone on medical leave. While no one including Cook can currently match Jobs' tech industry star power, some longtime industry observers say the key to Apple's future success lies in how much attention it can continue to draw to its products, not its leader.

Says Computer History Museum software curator Al Kossow: "The question is whether Tim Cook is going to keep innovating."

Decision making changes with age -- and age helps!

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

We make decisions all our lives?so you'd think we'd get better and better at it. Yet research has shown that younger adults are better decision makers than older ones. Some Texas psychologists, puzzled by these findings, suspected the experiments were biased toward younger brains.

So, rather than testing the ability to make decisions one at a time without regard to past or future, as earlier research did, these psychologists designed a model requiring participants to evaluate each result in order to strategize the next choice, more like decision making in the real world.

The results: The older decision makers trounced their juniors. The findings will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

"We found that older adults are better at evaluating the immediate and delayed benefits of each option they choose from. They are better at creating strategies in response to the environment," says Darrell Worthy, of Texas A&M University, who conducted the study with Marissa Gorlick, Jennifer Pacheco, David Schnyer, and Todd Maddox, all at the University of Texas at Austin.

In the first experiment, groups of older (ages 60 to early 80s) and younger (college-age) adults received points each time they chose from one of four options and tried to maximize the points they earned. In this portion, the younger adults were more efficient at selecting the options that yielded more points.

In the second experiment?the setup was a sham test of two "oxygen accumulators" on Mars?the rewards received depended on the choices made previously. The "decreasing option" gave a larger number of points on each trial, but caused rewards on future trials to be lower. The "increasing option" gave a smaller reward on each trial but caused rewards on future trials to increase. In one version of the test, the increasing option led to more points earned over the course of the experiment; in another, chasing the increasing option couldn't make up for the points that could be accrued grabbing the bigger bite on each trial.

The older adults did better on every permutation.

"The younger adults were better when only the immediate rewards needed to be considered," says Worthy. "But the second experiment required developing a theory about how rewards in the environment were structured. The more experience you have in this, the better you are better at it."

The psychologists conjecture that these results are related to the ways we use our brains as we age. Younger people's choice making relies on the ventral striatum, which is related to habitual, reflexive learning and immediate rewards: impulsivity. But as this portion of the brain declines, older adults compensate by using their pre-frontal cortices, where more rational, deliberative thinking is controlled.

"More broadly, our findings suggest that older adults have learned a number of heuristics"?reasoning methods?"from their vast decision-making experience," says Worthy. Another word for this, which the psychologists use in their title, is wisdom. For older people, it may be nice to know that this sometimes-undervalued asset has been ratified in the lab.

(AP) ? Jack Layton, a folksy and charismatic political leader who guided his party to become the dominant opposition group in Canada's Parliament while battling severe health problems, died Monday of cancer. He was 61.

Layton hobbled through the campaign earlier this year as he recovered from a broken hip and prostate cancer. Under his upbeat leadership the leftist New Democrats outpolled the Liberals and became the official opposition party for the first time in their 50-year history.

The New Democrat party issued a statement saying Layton died peacefully Monday morning at his Toronto home, surrounded by family and loved ones. Only weeks ago, a gaunt Layton shocked Canadians when he held a news conference to announce he was fighting a second bout of cancer.

The spring campaign started out looking like a straight battle between Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Liberals' Michael Ignatieff, with Layton recovering from prostate cancer and a broken hip.

But Layton's party scored its historic win by garnering 103 seats in the May federal election, up from a previous 37.

Layton's cheerful message, his strong performance in the debates, and his popularity in the French-speaking province of Quebec went over well with voters. He once was voted the politician Canadians would most want to have a beer with.

He was a native of Montreal, and a photo of him wearing a Montreal Canadiens jersey and pouring a beer during the hockey playoffs went viral in Quebec.

But Harper's Conservative government won a coveted majority government in part because the left-center vote in Canada split between the Liberals and New Democrats.

Harper said he was deeply saddened by Layton's death.

"When I last spoke with Jack following his announcement in July, I wished him well and he told me he'd be seeing me in the House of Commons in the fall. This, sadly, will no longer come to pass," Harper said in a statement.

Harper later spoke to the nation in a televised address from Parliament.

"Jack Layton will be remembered for the force of his personality and dedication to public life," Harper said. "We have all lost an engaging personality and a man with strong principles."

Harper, who sometimes plays the piano and sings, said he regretted not getting a chance to "jam" with Layton, who played the guitar, piano, harmonica and accordion.

Canadians left flowers and cards at the eternal flame on Parliament Hill, where the flag on the peace tower was lowered to half-staff. Anne McGrath, Layton's chief of staff, said the government will hold a state funeral for Layton in Toronto on Saturday.

Layton announced in February 2010 that he had been battling prostate cancer but he continued a crowded schedule while getting treatment.

He lost a considerable amount of weight and his voice was very weak when he said last month that his battle with prostate cancer was going well but that recent tests showed he had a new form of cancer. He not did elaborate on what type of cancer was discovered.

He was remembered Monday as a regular guy who made friends easily.

On the quiet Toronto side street where Layton lived, friends and neighbors stopped by, some bearing flowers.

"He was someone you could have a beer with," said Ted Hawkins, who laid a single red rose on the doorstep. "He was a very down-to-earth person."

Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae said the public Layton and the private Layton were one and the same ? a naturally upbeat person that everyone liked even if they disagreed with his political views.

In a touching letter written Saturday and released hours after his death, Layton called for a Canada that shares its benefits more fairly and asked Canadians to give his party a chance in the years to come.

He also urged cancer patients not to lose hope as treatments and therapies have never been better. "You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future," he wrote.

His advice to the nation reflected the philosophy that governed his life.

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world," he wrote.

As for young Canadians, he said, "I believe in you."

Layton came from a political family. He was the son of a former federal Progressive Conservative cabinet minister and the grandson of a prominent provincial politician in Quebec. He had said that although his father was a conservative, he truly cared about those less well off.

Layton was a career politician, a former longtime city councilor known to work tirelessly on behalf of the poor and homeless. He was also an early advocate for HIV and AIDS patients. He ran for mayor in Toronto and lost in 1991 after being criticized for living in subsidized housing and for opposing Toronto's ultimately failed bid for the 1996 Summer Olympics.

New Democrat lawmaker Libby Davies, her voice breaking, said Canadians came to love Layton "as someone who deeply, deeply cared for people."

McGrath, his chief of staff, said Layton had an easy rapport with the common citizen.

"You could not walk a block with that guy and get anywhere on time because everyone wanted to talk to him," McGrath said. "I remember people coming up to him and telling him deeply personal stories, in an elevator or in a coffee shop lineup or a restaurant. People felt that they could talk to him."

Stephen Lewis, the former U.N. special envoy trying to help combat AIDS in Africa, said Layton often lobbied him to run for the New Democrats, but told him after speech that he was doing the right thing by continuing in his role as U.N. envoy.

"It set aside all my anxieties about whether I was doing the right thing in life," Lewis said. "It was reassuring and I think he did that for people all the time. He reassured them and gave them a sense of their strength about what they were doing."

Layton's wife, Olivia Chow, is a former Toronto city councilor and now the New Democrat Parliament member for a downtown Toronto district.

He has two children, Sarah and Mike, from a previous marriage. Mike Layton is now a Toronto city councilor.
