BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Get the latest in?storm-resistant building tips at local home improvement and retail stores. FEMA staff will be at the stores Tuesday and Wednesday to show residents how to make structures stronger and safer in high winds.

?If you haven?t stopped by to get this free information, now is the time,? said State Coordinating Officer Jeff Byard of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. ?These construction methods are relatively easy and inexpensive when you consider the difference they can make in saving lives and property.?

FEMA staff will have?building plans and literature available to show residents how to use connectors, straps and ties at key joints to help transfer wind pressure from a structure?s roof to its foundation.

They will also have information on different types of safe rooms, ranging from pre-fabricated shelters to those built from scratch or included in new-house plans. ?After their experience with the April tornadoes, Alabamians are particularly interested in safe rooms,? said Federal Coordinating Officer Michael Byrne of FEMA. ?We have free building plans and guidelines for individual and community safe rooms that meet standards set by FEMA and the National Storm Shelter Association.?

FEMA?s mitigation outreach teams will be set up near the main store entrances from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on August 23 and 24.
