Talk of the impending update to Key Lime Pie has been rife of late, with a proposed Spring release edging ever nearer, but the latest and, we?re guessing, greatest version of the Android OS isn?t going to be making it to around 45 percent of users who are still stuck in the doldrums with Gingerbread and no chance of an update.
The news comes via Google?s monthly number-crunching exercise which shows that, despite being launched over two years ago, Android 2.3 is still running 45.6 percent of people?s smartphones while Ice Cream Sandwich, the update which promised to salve the platform?s fragmentation problem, has plateaued at just 29 percent.
Key Lime Pie will be version 5.0 of Google?s popular mobile platform and if Jelly Bean is anything to go by users can expect some huge improvements in the release, but the one thing that won?t be addressed by the update is the continued fragmentation of the operating system.
Despite Google?s efforts to bring together devices running its software, including recent changes to the terms and conditions of its Android SDK ,which left some developers incandescent with rage by the company?s apparent departure from ?true? Open Source, the issue is one which can?t be cured overnight, especially given the platform?s wide-spread adoption.
Could it be time for Google to follow Microsoft's lead and drive forward with Key Lime Pie, leaving users of earlier software behind? Or will Gingerbread continue to thrive?
We aren?t sure, but with devices running Android 2.3 still rolling off production lines the venerable old OS doesn?t appear to be going anywhere in a hurry ? and Key Lime Pie?s introduction certainly isn?t going to help.
