SHELBYVILLE, Ky. ? The Republican nominee for Kentucky governor has criticized Democratic incumbent Steve Beshear for participating in a Hindu ceremony that marked an Indian company's entry into the state.
Republican David Williams said Tuesday he would have attended but not participated in the ceremony in Elizabethtown. The Republican also suggested that Beshear ? the son and grandson of Baptist preachers ? engaged in idolatry by taking part in the event.
Beshear's campaign said the governor was proud of creating 250 jobs in the central Kentucky city and denounced the attack as "pathetic and desperate."
Williams has been trailing Beshear in polls.
Beshear participated in the ceremony with officials from Flex Films, which is building a $180 million plant.
The state characterized the event as a blessing ceremony that is traditional in India for new homes or businesses.
