Goalkeeper charged over alleged sectarian remark

updated 3:30 p.m. ET Nov. 7, 2011

GLASGOW, Scotland - Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Grant Adam will go on trial in February on a charge of making alleged sectarian remarks during a night out.

Grant Adam, brother of Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam, is alleged to have committed the offense early Sunday in Glasgow.

Adam, the No. 3 goalkeeper at Rangers, denied the charge when he appeared at a Glasgow court on Monday. He was released on bail and is to appear back in court on Jan. 25 ahead of a trial on Feb. 10.

Rangers traditionally are supported by the Protestant community in Glasgow and have an intense rivalry with Celtic, a club followed by the Catholic community.

Rangers has been fined on a number of occasions by European soccer's governing body for sectarian chanting by fans.
