Tori Spelling Dresses Baby Hattie as a Thanksgiving Turkey (omg!)

Tori Spelling Dresses Baby Hattie as a Thanksgiving Turkey

Tori Spelling is really, really into Thanksgiving.

Case in point: the 38-year-old mother-of-three dressed up her six-week-old daughter Hattie Margaret as a roast turkey to celebrate the holiday.

PHOTOS: Tori Spelling's family album

"If you have a baby at home, here's a fun Thanksgiving craft project you can make for what will be very memorable holiday photos," Spelling explained on her official website. "Your older kids will love helping to make this for their baby bro or sis -- Stella loved gluing the faux veggies on the faux platter."

Realizing that the pictures might one day embarrass her little girl, the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum offered a preemptive apology.

"Sorry to future 18 year-old Hattie. It was too cute an idea to pass up," Spelling wrote. "If it's any solace, you wore turkey well!"

Spelling may have had an easier time creating the costume than she did preparing the actual turkey. "Anyone else need a vacation after Thanksgiving?" she tweeted Friday. "Thanksgiving dinner prep is like hardcore culinary boot camp."

PHOTOS: Tori and Dean renew their vows

The actress -- who wed Dean McDermott in May 2006 -- is also mother to son Liam, 4, and daughter Stella, 3. The new season of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood premieres November 29 on Oxygen.

Even better, this is a geek gift guide created by geeks for geeks, with some geeky prizes thrown into the bargain. Last week I put out the call for?suggestions, and?it'll be up to you to select the?coolest,?most offbeat prize from the top 10. The geek who made the top-rated suggestion will be eligible to receive a pile of books, including "Science Ink," "The Cult of Lego," "The Physics Book" and "The Case for Pluto" (autographed by?yours truly).

Here are this year's 10 finalists:

Uranium marbles:?"Nothing says Merry Christmas like a little bit of radiation," says?Richard-1971294. He'd love to get his hands on some uranium marbles. Back in the old days,?pigments containing uranium oxide were used in?lots of items, including ceramic glazes, green-tinted glassware and, yes, children's marbles. Black Light World, which sells a three-pack of uranium-doped marbles for $9.95, says they're "totally safe" ? even though?radioactive caution?stickers are plastered all over the promotional images. You can also find 'em on eBay.

Dinosaur Corporation

A carnotaurus skull is flanked by a scale replica, available from the Dinosaur Corporation.

Dinosaur skulls: "Dino skull replicas are cool and geeky!" David Flowers tweeted in his response to the call for entries.?The Dinosaur Corporation offers a wide selection of skulls, molded?out of?polyurethane resin?to look like the real thing ...?only smaller. If you're looking for a real dinosaur skull, that'll cost you. A T. rex skull sold for $215,000 in March (and some?dino dung went for $1,200). Flowers also put a naked mole rat plushie on his geek-gift wish list.

The Elements?Vault: "Physics is hot these days, but for lovers of chemistry, this kit from Theodore Gray will be a real treat." says KGill. "His gorgeous book about the elements, 'The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe,' showcased the elegance of the periodic table, and the beauty of the elements. This collection incudes new text and photographs, reproductions of historic documents, a pop-up model of an atom, and samples of several elements."

Magnifying glasses and other optics: "Nothing beats a brand new magnifying glass," says?Jennifer Hancock, a Humanist author and speaker. "They get cruddy after a while, always nice to have a new one." Here's the set she has her eye on. Oh, and she wouldn't mind?getting a hand-held microscope and illuminator, plus a snazzy pair of binoculars. In her Twitter profile, Hancock calls herself a dork, but she sounds like?a bona fide geek to?me.?There is a difference.

NASA / JPL

Flaunt your Martian pride with a JPL lunchbox.

Mars rover lunchbox: Lights in the Dark blogger Jason Major says anything from ThinkGeek will do the trick, but he'd sure like to get a $20?Mars Exploration Rover lunchbox from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's online store. Space geeks of the female persuasion might consider some Red Planet earrings in honor of the about-to-be-launched Mars Science Laboratory mission.

USB microscope: "A USB microscope, with the ability to capture images digitally, is a great geek gift!" says Paliniasky. There's a mind-boggling selection, ranging from less than $20 to astronomical prices.

Plush microbes:?"GiantMicrobes are way awesome and super cute ? stuffed animal versions of microorganisms," says biology student?Kelsey Plesniak, a member of the Cosmic Log corps on Facebook. As we head into flu season, what better gift could you give a microbiology geek than ... a cuddly flu bug?

Wi-Fi detector shirt: This $14.99 ThinkGeek T-shirt has a?decal that glows to indicate the signal strength of wireless networks in the area. "My son the math teacher bought one of these earlier this year," George Buddy?Dow says on Facebook. "Inexpensive and practical." Just don't forget to remove the decal and the battery pack before you put it in the wash. Dow also puts in a plug for the "Ant Farm Revolution," which sounds like an entomological Occupy movement.

ThinkGeek

Cut a slice with the starship Enterprise.

Star Trek pizza cutter: Joel Davis casts his vote for a $29.99 ThinkGeek?kitchen accessory that promises to "boldly?cut pizza where no man has cut before." It's as if you're?holding a miniaturized starship Enterprise in the palm of your hand. Come to think of it, I've seen that episode.

Pi plate: "A pi plate is available. To make pies in," Jan Smith writes. "Has a large pi symbol in the center and the numbers 3.14159...?etc., all around the edge of the plate. I got one for my son." Here's an alternate design for the pi plate. Any way you slice it, this will be a good kitchen item to have around for March 14 ...?Pi Day.

Extra credit: You'll find all sorts of geeky (and not-so-geeky) gift ideas by following the links below,?and?you'll also want to check out our holiday book?roundup. You might also consider supporting The Illuminated Origin of Species, an effort by artist/naturalist Kelly Houle to create?an illuminated manuscript of Charles Darwin's masterwork in the spirit of the Book of?Kells. To support the effort, Houle is offering sets of Darwin-themed greeting cards, beetle prints and an adopt-a-beetle program.

Don't forget to cast a vote for your favorite gift among the top 10, and may the best geek win!

Broncos cut quarterback Kyle Orton (AP)

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. ? Kyle Orton has gone from Jay Cutler's replacement to Tim Tebow's backup to the unemployment line.

The Broncos released the 29-year-old veteran quarterback Tuesday, six weeks after benching him following a 1-4 start.

"I spoke with Kyle earlier today and thanked him for everything he did for the Broncos. He was a true professional throughout this season. I've got a great deal of respect for him as both a player and as a person," coach John Fox said in a statement.

"This was the right decision for our football team. We feel good about our quarterback group, and this gives Kyle an opportunity to help another team and showcase his talents."

Orton shouldn't stay unemployed for long.

Although he's a vested veteran with seven NFL seasons under his belt, Orton is subject to the waiver rules because he was released after the trade deadline. If another team claims him, it will be responsible for about $3 million in salary, which is what remains of his roughly $9 million contract for 2011. If nobody claims him, he'll be free to sign with anybody.

Two intriguing possibilities are the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans. Both are in the thick of the playoff race at 7-3 but have problems under center, and another potential destination is AFC West rival Kansas City.

Cutler broke the thumb on his right throwing hand last weekend and might miss the rest of the regular season. His backup is Caleb Hanie. The Bears visit the Broncos on Dec. 11.

Matt Schaub of the Texans is out for weeks with a right foot injury and he's been replaced by previously underachieving Matt Leinart.

Matt Cassel hurt his throwing hand in the Chiefs' 17-10 loss to Denver on Nov. 13 and had season-ending surgery the next day. His replacement, Tyler Palko, threw three interceptions in his first start, a 34-3 loss at New England on Monday night.

John Elway, the Broncos' executive vice president of football operations, called Orton an "absolute pro," and said he decided against keeping him on the roster through the remainder of the season.

"We thought it was best for the Broncos at this time as well as for Kyle to catch on with a different team," Elway said. "Kyle is going to have more options in the NFL. He'll get an opportunity to play somewhere else, and we wish him the best of luck."

The Broncos didn't announce a corresponding roster move, but one possibility was the promotion of rookie quarterback Adam Weber from the practice squad.

Orton was acquired in 2009 in the Cutler trade with the Bears and he won his first six starts in Denver before going 6-21. He passed for 3,000-plus yards in each of his first two seasons in Denver after spending his first four seasons in Chicago.

The Broncos tried to trade Orton after the NFL lockout ended in July but talks with Miami broke down and Fox threw open the quarterback competition, something for which Tebow proved ill-prepared.

Orton decisively outplayed Tebow in training camp for a second straight season but he turned ordinary when the games started to count, turning the ball over nine times and losing a string of winnable games and the organization's confidence.

Orton's slide hit bottom Oct. 9 when he went 6 for 13 for 34 yards in the first half against the Chargers and threw his seventh interception, tied for most in the league at the time.

Fox sent in Tebow to start the second half and after a slow start, the former Florida star sparked a listless offense to within a last-gasp pass of coming back against San Diego.

"I'm disappointed with everything," Orton said at the time. "I wish I could have played better, I wish we had a better record, I wish a lot of things, but the reality is what it is."

The next day, Fox pulled Orton aside before team meetings and informed him he had decided to go all-in on Tebow.

Orton pledged to be a good teammate and stay ready in case his number was called again, but Tebow has gone 4-1 with the Broncos tailoring their offense to his unique skill set and reintroducing the option to the NFL.

When the Broncos were walloped by the Lions in Tebow's second start, Brady Quinn leapfrogged Orton as the primary backup and appeared close to getting his shot under center. But Fox stuck with Tebow, albeit with the caveat that it was a week-to-week proposition.

Since then, Tebow has won all three of his starts and engineered fourth-quarter comebacks against the Raiders and Jets to go with his miracle in Miami, when he led the Broncos back from a 15-point deficit in the closing minutes for a win in overtime.

On Monday, Elway said on his weekly radio show, however, that he wasn't sold on Tebow as the long-term answer at quarterback, saying the second-year pro has to become a better passer and improve on third downs.

Tebow is completing just 44.8 percent of his passes and Denver was 1 for 11 on third downs last week before its game-winning, 95-yard touchdown drive that stunned the Jets 17-13.

Several teammates said Orton was anything but a cancer in the locker room in recent weeks, even though it had become obvious he was biding his time until his first foray into unfettered free agency as a healthy QB in his prime and with a .500 record as a starter.

Yet, his demotion did create some awkward moments. He kept his captainship after losing his starting job and would help lead the team during warm-ups before watching the less accurate but more mobile Tebow take the bulk of the snaps during the week.

Orton was still held in high esteem in the Broncos locker room, especially by veterans such as Champ Bailey and Andre' Goodman, who said at the time of Orton's benching that they felt he was being unfairly singled out as the reason for the team's bad start.

Google quits plans to make cheap renewable energy (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Google Inc has abandoned an ambitious project to make renewable energy cheaper than coal, the latest target of Chief Executive Larry Page's moves to focus the Internet giant on fewer efforts.

Google said on Tuesday that it was pulling the plug on seven projects, including Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal as well as a Wikipedia-like online encyclopedia service known as Knol.

The plans, which Google announced on its corporate blog, represent the third so-called "spring cleaning" announcement that Google has made since Google co-founder Page took the reins in April.

The changes come as Google is facing stiff competition in mobile computing and social networking from Apple Inc and Facebook, and as some investors have groused about rising spending at the world's No.1 Internet search company.

"To recap, we're in the process of shutting down a number of products which haven't had the impact we'd hoped for, integrating others as features into our broader product efforts, and ending several which have shown us a different path forward," wrote Google Senior Vice President of Operations Urs Holzle in the blog post.

Google said that it believed other institutions were better positioned to take its renewable energy efforts "to the next level."

Google began making investments and doing research into technology to drive down the price of renewable energy in 2007, with a particular focus on solar power technology.

In 2009, the company's so-called Green Energy Czar, Bill Weihl, told Reuters that he expected to demonstrate within a few years working technology that could produce renewable energy at a cheaper price than coal.

"It is even odds, more or less," Weihl said at the time. "In three years, we could have multiple megawatts of plants out there."

A Google spokesman said that Weihl had left Google earlier this month.

Google noted in its blog post that it would continue efforts to generate "cleaner, more efficient energy," including procuring renewable energy for its data centers.

Among the other projects included in Tuesday's "spring cleaning" were Google Knol, Google Search Timeline, Google Gear, Google Friend Connect, Google Bookmarks Lists and Google Wave, an ill-fated social networking and communication service that Google had previously said it would cease developing.

Google said that in December its email and calendar applications will no longer work with Gears technology, which allows Google's software to work when not connected to the Internet. Google said it is working to create offline capabilities into HTML5 technology instead.

Google Friend Connect, which allows website publishers to add social features to their sites, will be retired in March for all non-Blogger websites, Google said. It suggested that websites use its Google+ social network instead.

Earlier this year, Google said it would "wind down" Google Labs, a website that offered public access to experimental Google products, as well as terminating products that let consumers monitor their home energy consumption and keep track of their personal health records.

Shares of Google, which finished Tuesday's regular trading session down 94 cents, were up 86 cents at $580.86 in after hours trading.

How do you finance your small business idea? | task.fm

Welcome to the difficulty faced by every business owner since Hargem the Haircutter sharpened the first set of rocks and tried to convince someone to help him open a barber shop ? so that all the long haired men could have their locks shorn. ?

Financing of a small business idea is always a challenge, even in the best of circumstances. ? If you have a banker with whom you can work, you are in the lucky minority. ?Let?s talk first about why you always want to be searching for additional funding, and then talk about how you overcome the challenge that every business faces: ?Access to Financing.

The challenge for many of my clients always seems to be that ?the lenders??whoever they might be? want to lend you money when you don?t need it, and don?t want to loan you money when you do need it. ?Wait a minute?there is really a time that a small business doesn?t need more money? ?

Let?s clear up that misconception from the start. ?

Alan?s Small Business Theorem: ?If you own, dream about, have developed, or are purchasing a small business, you?ll need more money than you have planned for. ?At least 25% more. ?Or more.

I?m reminded of the time I was a teenager, and passed my Amateur Radio exam. ?Up went an antenna. ?Then I put up a different antenna, then that antenna went even higher. ?Finally, my long-suffering Mother, probably tired of aluminum antennae and wires in all the trees around the house, asked me, ?So, is that antenna high enough?? ?My answer, which I still remember to this day, was, ?No, Mom. ?They are all still up there. ?It?s not high enough unless it falls down. Then, it was high enough.?

Small business always needs to be on the hunt for financing. ?Let me share that again?small business always needs to be on the hunt for financing. ?And like the antenna story, what you?re seeking is probably never large enough.?

Let me share why?better yet, nine reasons why. ?We?ll call them:

?Alan?s Rules for Small Business Finance; or, Why You Should Always Be in the Hunt for Funds

  1. You never know when great opportunity will strike. ? Like lightning, it rarely strikes twice in the same place or the same way.
    ?
  2. You never know when you?ll need more money than the current cash flow allows. ?Wouldn?t you really rather be in the position of saying yes to an opportunity, than asking someone else, ?May I, please??
    ?
  3. You never know when one of your competitors may decide to throw in the towel and leave an expansion opportunity in the marketplace. ?It?s happening more and more often. Others may not have the same level of tenacity that you do.
    ?
  4. You never know when you?ll need a piece of machinery ? or a new vehicle ? or a new computer ? or to expand your production facility because you just landed a very large order. ?If you?re a super-salesperson, you know that next big order is just around the corner.
    ?
  5. If you find money available at lesser cost, retire the money you borrowed at a higher cost. ?Save a dollar.
    ?
  6. You never know when your own cost of funds will increase. (Especially if you hobbled together funds in the first place).
    ?
  7. You know that you?re not at capacity for the business, but you?re a bit afraid to take on more debt. ?If you just had that extra credit line?
    ?
  8. You know that your employees can do more than they are doing ? it?s just a matter of motivation. ?Maybe pay them a little more?
    ?
  9. Finally, think about this. ?No matter what you think your business is worth, it?s worth more than that to someone else. ?Small businesspeople, for some reason, tend to negate the true value of the business they own. It is an occupational hazard.

How do you overcome all these challenges? ?There are a variety of ways to address them.

  1. Never be afraid to speak with an equity lender. ? Often, you?ll find that many people are looking on as you successfully build your small business idea into a reality. ?They may be envious of the success you have achieved, or they may see working with you as simply a good investment. ?

Equity lenders may be willing to accept a piece of the company ? for a long or short term ? in return for a significant contribution of cash. ?Often, equity lenders may be willing to offer collateral against a bank line of credit, putting none of their own money into the deal, but collateralizing your ability to draw against a line of credit when it is needed. ?It?s great insurance for you, as the business owner, and helps you to sleep better at night, knowing you have a credit line you can draw against, if need be.
    ?

  2. Loans from family and friends are never free, and always have terms attached to them. Although you may end up taking loans from family or friends, it?s a quick way to create dissent; often, you?ll find even small amounts of money interfere with friendship.
    ?
  3. If you need equipment, look at your possibilities for leasing the equipment. ?Often, you?ll find that the lease offers a more financially lucrative deal to you from a tax perspective; if the lease is structured well, you may be able to write off a significant part of the cost of the equipment on taxes.
    ?
  4. If you?ve scored that huge order you were waiting on, and need to finance it, Congratulations! ?There are a variety of ways to do that. ?Don?t just decide a million dollar order can?t be filled. ?Inventory financing may be an option, or purchase order finance, or even a structured payment stream with the client. ?

Gaining ?Another Set of Eyes?

If you?re a small business and you?ve just closed a deal with a very large business, where one business is significantly larger than the other, you?ll probably want to get some specialized advice from a CPA, an Attorney, or a trusted business advisor or consultant. ?What you need before committing to any course of action is what I?ve dubbed ?another set of eyes.? ?Another set of eyes looking at the challenge will always, always?help you focus more clearly on the challenges at hand.

Charge forth, my friend. ?And let me assure you of one thing. ?There are always finance options available for any type of need. ?Someone will loan you the money, at some price. ?Don?t ever assume there is just no money available. ?The decision for you is this: ?Can you pay what the lender asks?

Israel mulls releasing taxes to Palestinians

(AP) ? An Israeli government official says Cabinet ministers are meeting to discuss releasing some $100 million in taxes to the Palestinian government in the West Bank, withheld following a Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations.

Israel collects customs, border and some income taxes on behalf of the Palestinians and relays them monthly to their West Bank government.

Earlier this month, Palestinian officials said Israel suspended November's transfer. This came after the Palestinians asked the U.N. to recognize an independent state of Palestine and won membership in a key U.N. agency. Israel opposes both moves.

The Israeli official discussed the Monday ministers' meeting on condition of anonymity because it was closed.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Palestinian officials say a Hamas naval policeman has been killed and seven others have been wounded in an Israeli airstrike on their building in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military says its aircraft struck an unspecified "terror activity site" early Monday after Palestinian militants in Hamas-run Gaza fired a rocket at southern Israel. No one was hurt in that rocket attack Sunday evening.

The casualties were confirmed by Gaza health official Adnan Abu Salmia.

The mayor of Beit Lahiya, Izzedine Dahnoun, said an electricity transformer supplying northern Gaza from Israel was damaged by the blast, knocking out power to some 100,000 people.

Hamas officials say all their personnel were instructed to evacuate their buildings to avoid another airstrike.

Thailand flooding damages its ancient capital (AP)

AYUTTHAYA, Thailand ? Water fowl, monitor lizards and stray dogs have replaced the throngs of tourists at one of Thailand's greatest historical sites. Record flooding has turned Ayutthaya's ancient temples into islands, and a giant statue of the reclining Buddha appears to float miraculously on the lapping water.

Experts fear that at least half of the more than 200 waterlogged monasteries, fortresses and other monuments in the one-time royal capital have been damaged.

"Imagine a thousand tons of brick and stone resting on soft foundations, with no modern-style pilings. We are very worried," said Chaiyanand Busayarat, director of the Ayutthaya Historic Park.

And as floodwaters recede, some experts are proposing a radical change to prevent similar disasters in the future: Turn back the clock about four centuries to emulate the city's urban planners and engineers of that time.

"We can't prevent flooding so we have to learn to live with water again, like those who created Ayutthaya. Let's take out the old city maps," said Anek Sihamat, deputy director-general of the Thai government's Fine Arts Department.

He recommended digging up old canals that have been paved over for roads and curbing the urban sprawl and industrial parks that block the natural runoff of water.

Capital of a powerful state for 417 years, seat of 33 kings, Ayutthaya has been described as one of the greatest cities on water ever, with a canal network that measured more than 85 miles (140 kilometers). Built on the flood plain of central Thailand at the confluence of three rivers, it was inundated annually, but its citizens lived in stilt-raised houses and used boats for transport.

Water also defended Ayutthaya, which once held as many as 1 million residents, until a brutal sacking by the Burmese in 1767 forced relocation of the capital to Bangkok, 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the south ? where the same floodwaters that inundated Ayutthaya are now nearing the inner city.

The surge of water from the northern highlands, which began in late July and has killed more than 520 people, is the worst since the 1940s, although Ayutthaya experiences flooding almost every monsoon season.

In coming weeks, experts will assess damage and determine what will be needed to revive and protect the city, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1991.

Advisers from Venice and the Netherlands, two places that have grappled with the challenges of watery environments, are prepared to come, while several countries, including Germany and Japan, have provided or promised funds. Anek, the Fine Arts official, estimated that some $20 million will be needed.

"Clearly what we hope for from this experience will be a more solid, more thorough flood mitigation plan," said Tim Curtis, head of the culture unit at UNESCO's regional office in Bangkok.

He said that Amsterdam's 19th-century water-based defense line ? another World Heritage site ? and Venice may be used as models.

Witthaya Pewpong, the Ayutthaya provincial governor, said a dam has been proposed to shield the historic area while flooding would be eased by setting aside a large, construction-free area of the nearby countryside to absorb excess water.

Nevertheless, authorities "know that they will have to learn to live with water because it will always be there," said UNESCO cultural expert Montira Horayangura Unakul. As such, urban planning should be consistent with Ayutthaya's design as a city of water, she said.

To date, Ayutthaya has not scored well on the urban management front. The city of 82,000 people is mushrooming helter-skelter and has bid to host World Expo 2020. Four years ago, amid concern in Thailand that UNESCO might take the city off its list, one Bangkok newspaper wrote that the city was destroyed twice, "first by invading Burmese, and now by greedy and insensitive Thais."

Adding to its watery woes, said Curtis, are problems common to heritage sites: the looting of artifacts, inadequate waste disposal, corrosive vehicle fumes, ugly and inappropriate new construction and mass tourism.

There's also a running battle between heritage and municipal authorities, often allied with business interests.

The Fine Arts Department controls development in the core historic area of some 1.2 square miles (3 square kilometers), where no structures more than 26 feet (8 meters) are permitted. However, it exercises little power in outlying zones, which include numerous important monuments and where modern buildings have sprouted next to graceful relics of the past.

Most immediately, however, heritage authorities are focused on the floods.

With water up to 10 feet (3 meters) high flooding the area for weeks, there is concern that the foundations of larger structures may have been undermined, and bricks, plasterwork and murals damaged. Visitor facilities and once grassy areas emerging as a sea of mud will need to be restored at what is one of the country's top tourist destinations.

Also worrisome is salt residue that seeps up with the groundwater, causing damage to monuments.

Park director Chaiyanand said the stupas, or Buddhist reliquary, in Ayutthaya were built with an outer core of brick. The hollow portions inside were filled with sand. When the floods came, the water was absorbed upward into this inner chamber of sand, which became heavier. He fears the weight could cause cracks of the outer brick shell.

Water that is hard to detect and remove may also remain within walls after the floodwaters recede. Chaiyanand said he was particularly concerned about the bricks that were the key building blocks of old Ayutthaya.

"They're like crackers," he said, noting the mossy, water-stained bricks at the base of a stupa at the 15th-century Phra Srisanphet monastery. "When soaked they become easy to break."

Newsmaker: "Italian Prussian" Monti enters political storm (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Mario Monti, the economist who will head an emergency Italian government following the departure of Silvio Berlusconi, brings credentials earned in a decade of battles as a European Commissioner from the 1990s.

Monti made his name as the powerful Competition Commissioner who took on U.S. corporate titans General Electric and Microsoft, blocking GE's planned merger with rival Honeywell and imposing a record 497 million euro ($683 million) antitrust fine on the software giant.

His technical expertise, sharp intellect and diplomatic skills added to his refusal to bow to intense lobbying pressures made him one of the most highly regarded officials the Commission has seen.

"He didn't have a very Italian way of going about things," recalls one former ambassador, who worked with Monti in Brussels and remembers him as a hard but reliable negotiating partner. "His nickname in those days was 'The Italian Prussian.'"

He was nominated by Berlusconi as internal markets commissioner in 1994, taking over the competition portfolio in 1999 where he served for five years.

Named last week as Senator for Life by President Giorgio Napolitano, Monti, 68, is expected to appoint a small cabinet made up largely of technical specialists to steer Italy through a crisis that has brought it to the brink of financial disaster.

A similar technocrat government under former Bank of Italy official Lamberto Dini passed important reforms in 1995 and the hope of many outside Italy is that Monti can do the same.

A convinced free marketeer with close connections to the European and global policy-making elite, Monti has always backed a more closely integrated euro zone and has written a series of articles in recent months lambasting the Berlusconi government's policy failures.

He is chairman of the European branch of the Trilateral Commission, a body that brings together the power elites of the United States, Europe and Japan and is also a member of the secretive Bilderberg Group of business leaders and other "leading citizens."

REFORM DEMANDS

With bond markets pushing Rome ever closer to the point where it would need an international bailout to manage its towering public debt, investors' hopes have been pinned on a solution that would get past Italy's dysfunctional politics.

Italy's main business and banking associations have called for a "national emergency government" with broad parliamentary backing, warning that "this is not the moment for conflict and division."

Monti himself underlined the temptation of a non-political solution in an article in August entitled "Il podesta forestiero," a reference to the foreign governors or "podestas" appointed by the strife-torn Italian cities of the Middle Ages.

The article referred to reform demands imposed by the European Central Bank in return for its agreement to prop up Italian bonds in the markets, but it highlighted the widespread frustration at the failings of Italy's political class.

But, as numerous politicians have pointed out over the past few days, the notion of a pure "technical government" above the daily fray is an illusion which is likely to be severely tested in the weeks and months ahead.

"He has a good feeling for how politics works but he isn't a man for horse trading," said one longtime associate.

New elections are not due until 2013, giving Monti and his cabinet a window of around 18 months to implement the kind of painful reforms to pensions, labor laws and the public sector that markets and Italy's European partners are demanding.

But he will need to secure the support of a parliament which has not won a reputation for a high-minded sense of public responsibility over recent years. If he loses a confidence vote in parliament, elections early next year may be inevitable.

So far, Monti has the backing of the center-left Democratic Party and the smaller centrist groups, and the secretary of Berlusconi's center-right People of Freedom party -- badly split by the crisis -- has said the party will support him.

The regional pro-devolution Northern League has said it will wait to see what Monti's program looks like. But outgoing Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, a senior League leader, said Monti faced an uphill battle.

"The decisions which Monti will take must pass in parliament and I think that with such a heterogeneous majority he will have many problems. I believe this solution will lead to many problems," he said.

(AP) ? Republicans vying to challenge President Barack Obama for his job tangled over waterboarding, Iran and what to do about the decade-long war in Afghanistan. One thing they all agreed on is that Obama needs to go.

Herman Cain and Rep. Michele Bachmann both said in Saturday's GOP primary debate on foreign policy that they would reinstate waterboarding, an interrogation technique designed to simulate drowning and widely considered torture.

Cain said he would leave it up to military leaders, not their civilian superiors, to decide what forms of interrogation amount to torture, which he said he opposes.

As for the war in Afghanistan, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas both said it was time for U.S. troops to come home.

While the Republicans were talking about foreign policy, Obama was on the world stage as America's diplomat in chief.

After meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Hawaii, he said the two men intend to "shape a common response" to new allegations that Iran has been covertly trying to build a nuclear bomb. The issue is fraught because the regime in Tehran is harshly anti-Israel, a nation the United States has pledged to defend.

If the presidential trip gave the Republicans pause, they didn't show it in their 90-minute debate.

"There are a number of ways to be smart about Iran, and a few ways to be stupid. The administration skipped all the ways to be smart," said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The debate came less than two months before the formal selection of national convention delegates begins on Jan. 3 with the Iowa caucuses. The race for the right to challenge Obama remains remarkably unsettled.

Mitt Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, has been at or near the top of the public opinion polls for months, while a succession of rivals vying to emerge as his principal challenger has risen and fallen in turn.

The latest soundings show Cain the current leader in that sweepstakes, although Gingrich has risen in national polls in recent weeks as Texas Gov. Rick Perry has fallen back. And while the subject matter of defense and foreign policy didn't readily lend itself to a discussion of the principal campaign controversies, the race has had plenty of them in the past two weeks.

Cain has denied any and all charges of sexual harassment ? four women have leveled accusations ? while Perry embarked on an apology tour after failing in a debate Wednesday night to remember the name of the third of three Cabinet-level departments he would abolish as president.

The debate at Wofford College was crisp, and any attempts to score points off a rival lacked the personal antagonism of earlier encounters.

The tone was set at the outset, when the Republicans were asked if they would support a pre-emptive strike to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Gingrich said that if other means failed, "you have to take whatever steps are necessary" to prevent the Islamic regime from gaining a nuclear weapon.

Romney said he would take military action "if all else fails."

Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania agreed. Noting that a mysterious computer virus had caused disruption inside Iran's nuclear labs, and that Iranian scientists have been assassinated in recent months, he said, "I hope that the U.S. has been involved" in those and other covert actions.

Paul wanted no part of a military strike. "It's not worthwhile to go to war," he said. He added said that if America's security is threatened the president must ask Congress for a formal declaration of war before taking military action.

Perry responded without answering the question. "This country can sanction the Iranian central bank right now and shut down that country's economy, and that's what the president needs to do," he said.

The United States has long had sanctions in place against Iran, and Obama remarks in Hawaii suggested there will soon be more.

The war in Afghanistan produced the same range of responses as the question relating to Iran's nuclear ambitions ? unanimous criticism of the president but differences among the Republicans seeking to take his place as commander in chief of the military.

Huntsman, who served as Obama's first ambassador to China, said it was time to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

"I say it's time to come home. I say this nation has achieved its key objectives," he said.

Romney and Perry said they would side with military commanders about when to withdraw troops.

Yet Romney backed a timetable of a complete withdrawal by the end of 2014, the same that Obama has cited.

Obama's would-be successors differed on waterboarding, as well, the interrogation technique that former President George W. Bush authorized and Obama has banned.

While Cain and Bachmann both said they would reinstate the technique, Huntsman said use of the procedure diminishes U.S. standing in the world and Paul said it is illegal.

Judge in handcuffs is symbol for anti-Chavez camp (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Once a month, Venezuela's best-known judge is handcuffed, led out of her apartment and escorted by troops to a courthouse to stand trial.

But Maria Lourdes Afiuni refuses to enter the courtroom. It is her way of saying she won't get a fair hearing.

The combative and self-assured judge is being tried on corruption charges that have made her a cause celebre to government opponents who accuse President Hugo Chavez of wielding undue influence over Venezuela's judicial system.

Afiuni infuriated Chavez when she freed a banker from the prison where he was awaiting trial on charges of flouting the country's currency exchange controls. A day after her arrest on Dec. 10, 2009, Chavez said on national TV that he had discussed Afiuni's action with the president of the Supreme Court. "This judge," he fumed, "should get the maximum sentence, and whoever does this ? 30 years in prison!"

To Chavez's critics, it was something of a smoking gun for their argument that he is using the judiciary to harass his opponents. Chavez insists everything he has done during his nearly 13 years as president is legal and that judges and prosecutors must remain fully independent.

Now under house arrest and confined to her apartment, 48-year-old Afiuni is under a gag order so she airs her protests daily on Twitter to her more than 82,000 followers. She calls herself a "judge kidnapped by order of Chavez."

In her apartment, she listens in silence, at times smiling, at times frowning in consternation, as her brother, Nelson Afiuni, makes the case for setting her free. Explaining her refusal to enter the courtroom, he says: "She doesn't want to submit to a conviction that they've already written."

Venezuela isn't the only Latin American country whose leaders are accused of interfering in the legal system, and Venezuela's system was vulnerable to powerful interests long before Chavez took office.

But during the past decade, human rights activists say, its courts have become less independent, with prosecutors and judges increasingly acting in concert with the government to target opponents or others who, knowingly or not, cross those in power.

Chavez's rival in the 2006 presidential race, Manuel Rosales, fled into exile, saying prosecutors were falsely accusing him of corruption. Guillermo Zuloaga, the majority owner of anti-Chavez television channel Globovision, fled to the U.S. last year to escape criminal charges that he called politically motivated.

Chavez vehemently denies the charges of interference, while human rights activists say Afiuni's case stands out because she is being prosecuted for a routine ruling and because Chavez intervened so openly.

Amnesty International is demanding her release. So is American activist Noam Chomsky, whom Chavez admires.

Afiuni was arrested minutes after she released banker Eligio Cedeno, who had been in jail awaiting trial on charges of violating currency controls. He was accused of helping a company obtain $27 million in dollars through the government for computer equipment that never reached Venezuela.

Afiuni's brother noted that Venezuelans in custody should not by law be held longer than two years without trial, and Cedeno had been in jail for nearly three years. Also, he said, the judge felt the evidence was too thin to justify continued imprisonment, and the prosecutors had for the second time failed to show up for hearings.

Afiuni's lawyer, Jose Amalio Graterol, said the judge made a sound, lawful decision in releasing Cedeno on condition he stay in Venezuela and regularly report to a court while awaiting trial. Graterol said the judge also took into account an opinion by the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention that Cedeno's detention was arbitrary.

Chavez called it corruption. "I demand firmness against that judge," he said. "A judge who frees a criminal is much, much, much more serious than the criminal himself."

He didn't mention any particular grudge against Cedeno, though the wealthy banker has since said he gave money to the opposition and was jailed for political reasons.

Cedeno fled to the U.S. within days, and was eventually granted asylum. Afiuni is charged with corruption, abuse of authority and aiding an inmate's escape. Her lawyer says the charges are baseless.

Chavez's critics say the judiciary is increasingly stacked in the government's favor. Blanca Rosa Marmol de Leon, a Supreme Court magistrate and its only voice strongly critical of the justice system, expresses concern that the overwhelming majority of the nation's judges have been replaced during Chavez's presidency. Their replacements "are afraid" to go against the authorities because of what has become known as "the Afiuni effect," she says.

In a telephone interview, Marmol de Leon blamed Chavez for the judge's arrest, saying: "Judge Afiuni is detained due to a decision by the president." Afiuni's lawyer, Graterol, wants the judge in her case disqualified, saying that he has shown an open pro-Chavez bias.

Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz has said there were irregularities in Cedeno's release and that Afiuni went against a Supreme Court decision granting prosecutors additional time in the case. Prosecutors did not respond to requests for an interview.

After her arrest, Afiuni spent nearly 14 months in jail. There, her brother says, she endured threats by other women inmates and was narrowly saved by National Guard troops just as prisoners were about to douse her cell with gasoline to set it ablaze.

In February, she was granted house arrest due to health problems. Supporters welcomed her home, painting "Judge Afiuni Honesty and Courage" on a wall outside her apartment complex.

She lives with her 19-year-old daughter and parents, confined indoors by soldiers seated outside her front door round the clock.

White House circulated plan to replace Chu (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Top officials at the White House circulated a plan calling for the ouster of Energy Secretary Steven Chu and other top Energy Department officials as the administration braced for a political storm brewing over the failing solar energy company Solyndra.

An email from a clean-energy activist and former official in President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign said Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, was a brilliant man but "not perfect" for other critical DOE missions, including creating jobs. The Feb. 25 email from Dan Carol, a former issues adviser in Obama's campaign, was circulated by then-Chief of Staff Peter Rouse and seen by more than a dozen senior White House officials, including senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and then-energy adviser Carol Browner.

The emails were released late Friday by the government in response to a subpoena by House Republicans, who are investigating a $528 million federal loan received by Solyndra. The firm later went bankrupt and laid off its 1,100 workers.

A White House spokesman said Friday the plan to oust Chu was not taken very seriously.

Rouse, in a March 14 email to Deputy Chief of Staff Nancy-Ann DeParle, passed along Carol's proposal, saying he was "not that interested in Dan's criticism of Secretary Chu," but said Carol was smart and shared the president's views on energy policy.

In the Feb. 25 email, Carol said Chu should be reassigned as chief scientist at Energy, where he could "reinspire and reorganize" DOE's labs.

"This is a HUGE job and he would be perfect for it," Carol said, adding that Chu "is a wonderful and brilliant man, but he is not perfect for the other critical DOE mission: deploying existing technologies at scale and creating jobs."

The memo also says the energy secretary should be "comfortable meeting with bankers," adding that the bookish Chu is not comfortable doing that. Carol also recommended an overhaul of Energy Department staff, including Chu's deputy, the department's chief of staff and its undersecretary.

Carol acknowledged that Obama was unlikely to replace Chu, "out of personal affection of perhaps concern of perceived public perception of failure."

Even if Chu were not reassigned, Carol added, the Energy Department should redirect its efforts on the $38 billion loan guarantee program and other spending. "There is a still A LOT of money over there that could be repurposed to better uses," he wrote.'

Carol suggested Navy Secretary Ray Mabus as a replacement for Chu, adding that the new secretary should not come from Silicon Valley. Such an appointment "will get caught up in the wave of GOP attacks that are surely coming over Solyndra and other inside DOE deals that have gone to Obama donors and have underperformed," Carol wrote.

Why Apple isn't releasing a TV

The internet was ablaze upon the release of the Steve Job's biography about a particularly interesting quote that seemed to reveal that Apple would release a TV. This is just as exciting a proposition as it was four years ago to smartphone users who dreamed that Apple would fix the mobile phone. But the fact is that Apple, and many others, have been trying to "fix" TV for years, and to date we are still stuck with hundreds of channels that have nothing on, a dozen remotes and a textbook example of how not to make a user interface. It seems, though, that people are ignoring another Jobs quote, from just over a year ago at All Things D, that seems to explain very plainly why Apple has yet to release anything more than a hobby. When asked about Apple and the TV market, Jobs' reply showed how well-versed he was in the TV industry, but the choice quote was "it's not a problem with technology, it's not a problem with vision, it's a fundamental go-to-market problem." Jobs also explains that Apple made an iPhone and the iPad instead of a TV because there wasn't a choice, "there was no way to get it to market." So as much as we'd like to shed the chains that are channels and grid guides, as long as the monopolies that own the wires that run into our homes control the bits that travel over them, there just isn't a way to change TV.

How Did Ohio, Mississippi Ballot Initiatives Fare in 2011 Election? (ContributorNetwork)

The election that took place on Nov. 8, 2011 featured a number of statewide initiatives that have national import. Two of the results would seem to favor Democrats while two other results favored Republicans.

What the meaning these initiatives have for the 2012 election, if any, will be the subject of considerable debate for the next few weeks. Both sides of the political aisle find reason for comfort and for concern.

Ohio Issue 2: Collective Bargaining Rights for Public Sector Unions

Ohio voters rejected the Issue 2 ballot initiative, a result that had the effect of repealing a law passed in the Ohio legislature that restricted the rights of public sector employees to collectively bargain. Labor unions poured in tens of millions of dollars and many thousands of man hours to defeat the initiative. They succeeded by about a two to one margin. Conservatives warn, however, that this means that either taxes will have to be raised or services cut and employees laid off.

Ohio Issue 3: The Individual Insurance Mandate Under Obamacare

Proving that health care reform, also known as Obamacare, remains universally unpopular, voters in Ohio voted to pass Issue 3, which would exempt Ohioans from having to comply with the individual insurance mandate. Unfortunately if Obamacare remains law and if the Supreme Court upholds the individual mandate, the results of the measure are largely moot. It would, however, prevent Ohio from enacting its own version of Romneycare, passed in Massachusetts, which also has an individual mandate.

Mississippi Initiative 26: The Personhood Amendment

This ballot initiative would have defined a human being a legal person from the moment of conception, effectively outlawing all abortions, even in the case of rape or incest. This initiative proved to be too much, even for conservative, Bible belt Mississippi. The fear of unintended consequences, including the possibility that a woman suffering a miscarriage might be charged with involuntary manslaughter, influenced Mississippi voters to turn down the amendment.

Mississippi Initiative 31: Eminent Domain Reform

Even since the Supreme Court's Kelo decision, which permitted state and local governments to seize private property and to give that property to another private entity under eminent domain, states and localities have been scrambling to pass laws to tighten restrictions on eminent domain. Mississippi is the latest state to do so, passing a ballot initiative that largely prohibits state and local governments from taking private property and giving it to another private entity, even if it can claim that a public purpose, usually higher tax revenues, is being facilitated. It is another victory for property rights.

Women see naked men differently too

Thursday, November 10, 2011

For both men and women, wearing revealing attire causes them to be seen as more sensitive but less competent, says a new study by University of Maryland psychologist Kurt Gray and colleagues from Yale and Northeastern University.

In an article just published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the researchers write that it would be absurd to think people's mental capacities fundamentally change when they remove clothing. "In six studies, however, we show that taking off a sweater?or otherwise revealing flesh?can significantly change the way a mind is perceived."

Past research, feminist theory and parental admonishments all have long suggested that when men see a woman wearing little or nothing, they focus on her body and think less of her mind. The new findings by Gray, et al. both expand and change our understanding of how paying attention to someone's body can alter how both men and women view both women and men.

"An important thing about our study is that, unlike much previous research, ours applies to both sexes. It also calls into question the nature of objectification because people without clothes are not seen as mindless objects, but they are instead attributed a different kind of mind," says UMD's Gray."

"We also show that this effect can happen even without the removal of clothes. Simply focusing on someone's attractiveness, in essence concentrating on their body rather than their mind, makes you see her or him as less of an agent [someone who acts and plans] more of an experiencer."

Objectification vs. Two Kinds of Mind

Traditional research and theories on objectification suggest that we see the mind of others on a continuum between the full mind of a normal human and the mindlessness of an inanimate object. The idea of objectification is that looking at someone in a sexual context?such as in pornography?leads people to focus on physical characteristics, turning them into an object without a mind or moral status.

However, recent findings indicate that rather than looking at others on a continuum from object to human, we see others as having two aspects of mind: agency and experience. Agency is the capacity to act, plan and exert self-control, whereas experience is the capacity to feel pain, pleasure and emotions. Various factors ? including the amount of skin shown ? can shift which type of mind we see in another person.

In multiple experiments, the researchers found further support for the two kinds of mind view. When men and women in the study focused on someone's body, perceptions of agency (self-control and action) were reduced, and perceptions of experience (emotion and sensation) were increased. Gray and colleagues suggest that this effect occurs because people unconsciously think of minds and bodies as distinct, or even opposite, with the capacity to act and plan tied to the "mind" and the ability to experience or feel tied to the body.

According to Gray, their findings indicate that the change in perception that results from showing skin is not all bad. "A focus on the body, and the increased perception of sensitivity and emotion it elicits might be good for lovers in the bedroom," he says.

Their study also found that a body focus can actually increase moral standing. Although those wearing little or no clothes --or otherwise represented as a body ? were seen to be less morally responsible, they also were seen to be more sensitive to harm and hence deserving of more protection. "Others appear to be less inclined to harm people with bare skin and more inclined to protect them. In one experiment, for example, people viewing male subjects with their shirts off were less inclined to give those subjects uncomfortable electric shocks than when the men had their shirts on.," Gray says.

However, Gray and his coauthors note that in work or academic contexts, where people are primarily evaluated on their capacity to plan and act, a body focus clearly has negative effects. Seeing someone as a body strips him or her of competence and leadership, potentially impacting job evaluations.

"Even more than robbing someone of agency, the increased experience that may accompany body perceptions may lead those who are characterized in terms of their bodies to be seen as more reactive and emotional, traits that may also serve to work against career advancement," they write.

Even the positive aspects of a body focus, such as an increased desire to protect from harm, can be ultimately harmful, the authors say, pointing to the "benevolent sexism" common in the United States in the 1950s, in which men oppressed women under the guise of protecting them.
