After sweeping across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast Monday, wintry wind and snow showers were expected to ease Tuesday, winding down the region's first lake-effect storm system of the season, meteorologists said.
Blustery winds were forecast to continue over the Great Lakes, causing heavy snow showers downwind of the lakes early in the day but becoming more scattered in the afternoon.
AccuWeather reported that bands of snow showers descended south as far as the Atlanta area overnight. The weather system was forecast to turn to rain as it stretched into the Appalachians on Tuesday, AccuWeather said.
Storm totals for areas of the northern peninsula of Michigan, western Michigan, northeastern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and western New York were expected to be quite high as total snow accumulations from the lake-effect storm event range from 8 to 18 inches.
Winter Weather Advisories, Winter Storm Warnings, and Lake-Effect Snow Watches and Warnings were to remain in effect for areas downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario through Tuesday evening.
In addition to snow, strong northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph were forecast and were expected to affect traffic with periods of blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibilities.
On Monday, the storm system caused numerous car crashes and multiple-car pileups on highways from Michigan to Kentucky.
