Church breaks ground for new facility
On Nov. 20, the pastors, Administrative Board and members of the congregation of the Briary Run Church held a ground breaking service on their church property on Briary Run Road.
The congregation sold its property on West Road in December 2010 to the Jumping Run Church, and since has been holding services in the former Five Star building on Sussex Street, across from Walmart.
In May, the church agreed to purchase 33 acres on Briary Run Road to build its new facilities. Site work and construction, by Jarman Construction Company, will begin within the next few weeks.
The congregation will continue to meet at the Sussex Street building until the new facility is finished. The anticipated move-in date is this summer.

Farmer?s market to close for winter
The Lenoir County Farmer?s Market will be?open on Friday and Saturday with plenty of New Year?s collards and sweet potatoes.
After Saturday, the market will close for the winter, to re-open when the strawberries are ready, probably in mid-April. Watch The Free Press, your email and Facebook for re-opening information.
The staff appreciates everyone?s loyalty and support of local agriculture this year.

Bridge club names winners
The Fairfield Duplicate Bridge Club played a regular game Dec. 20.
The winners were: Tempie Pierce and Sarah Mullikin, first; Billie Jean Wooten/Nancy Barwick and Pearl Schechter/Joe Goldwasser, second-place tie; and Eva Balknight/Jenny Holt, Annie Bennings/Deloris Booker and Pinkey Harper/Geneva Hood, three-way tie for fourth.
A regular game will be played at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday at Fairfield Center. The club welcomes and encourages all bridge players.

Beefeater misnamed in recent photo
In the Weekend section of Thursday?s Free Press, an article announced an annual event to which the community looks forward this time of year.
The Boar?s Head and Yule Log Festival at St. Mary?s Episcopal Church is full of pomp and pageantry, and the Beefeaters play their part in guarding the manor.
In the photo of the Beefeaters, which ran with the story, David Albritton was incorrectly identified as Richard Albritton.
