Your Virtual Assistant

Your Virtual AssistantMichelle Mangen applies her knowledge of accounting, social media, and payroll to help small business owners be more productive through her firm,?Your Virtual Assistant. Mangen is based in Florida, but services clients all over the country. ?She specializes in WordPress services, QuickBooks, social media management, administration services, and Excel spreadsheet creation. She strives to help business owners get more hours in the day by delegating tasks she can assist with:

Small Business Trends:?What?s your top tip for small business owners today?

Michelle Mangen:?My top tip would be that we have to stay current in our industry in order to remain knowledgeable and competitive. Maybe this means taking some classes, reading certain material, etc. Building relationships is also important as well, especially if you are a solo-preneur.

Small Business Trends:?If you were stuck on a desert island?with?Internet, what would be the single app or website you couldn?t live without?

Michelle Mangen:?For me that would be Basecamp. Since most of the tasks I receive from clients are through email it?s important for me to have some system that makes it easy to record items that need follow up. Basecamp allows me to assign tasks out to other team members and the threaded conversations makes it easy to keep everything together (and tidy).

Small Business Trends:?What role does social media play in marketing your business?

Michelle Mangen:?Both very little and a lot. Twitter has always been my favorite social network and the one I spend the most time on. I don?t really ?market? my business per se but have gotten the majority of my client base as a direct result of a relationship that developed on Twitter. I?ve never been the self-promotion type (it makes me uncomfortable) which is why I really don?t do any marketing. I?ve also been incredibly blessed with ?word of mouth? referrals.

Hawkeye Management

Hawkeye ManagementHawkeye Management?provides lines of credit to small businesses of $50,000 to $100,000 or more. The company prides itself on its track record: to date, 70% of the business owners who apply for unsecured business credit through Hawkeye have been approved. With an industry average of only 10%, Hawkeye stands out in its ability to connect business owners with the right lenders. ?Tom Gazaway, President and CEO of Hawkeye Management, shares his insights:

Small Business Trends:?What?s one thing you never skimp on in your business?

Tom Gazaway:?Our brand. Don?t have a crappy logo, don?t put out bad content, don?t have bad business cards or a bad website.? Do it right or don?t do it.? There are a lot of things we may be ready for, but we won?t do it if we can?t do it well.? That doesn?t mean you won?t make mistakes, but shoot for perfection and settle for excellence.

Small Business Trends:?What role does social media play in marketing your business?

Tom Gazaway:?It?s integral.? We use tools like Hubspot, TweetDeck and Vocus to make our social media efforts more effective, efficient and measurable but you?re not a pioneer if you get on Twitter.? You?re a dinosaur if you?re not there.

Small Business Trends:?If you could have one small biz superhero power, what would it be?

Tom Gazaway:?I?m rarely and probably never the most talented, most gifted, or smartest guy in any audience but I have an unquenchable thirst to be better, grow our brand, and shake up the market. ?So passion can make up for a lot of things.

Research Access

Research AccessFor those with a passion for research,?Research Access?is the blog to read. It?s the effort of?Survey Analytics, which offers an enterprise grade research platform for collecting feedback to enable businesses, governments and consumers to participate and learn from each other. This blog, however, focuses on helping business people who are tasked with marketing research and includes videos, podcasts, and how-to posts on surveys, data tools, and analysis. ?Dana Stanley, VP of Marketing for Survey Analytics, answers our questions:
Small Business Trends: What?s your top tip for small business owners today?

Dana Stanley:?You may think market research is out of your budget, but technology has made it easier than ever to affordably get market feedback before making major business decisions. It can be inexpensive to do online surveys and get feedback on your products and services prior to investing your money and time in launching them. A small investment in research can pay off big.

Small Business Trends: If you were stuck on a desert island?with?internet, what would be the single app or website you couldn?t live without?

Dana Stanley:?Market researchers love information, so I?m going to have to go with Wikipedia. Not only does it have a shocking level of detail, it?s also updated seemingly to the minute on current events.

Small Business Trends:?If you could have one small biz superhero power, what would it be?

Dana Stanley:?As market researchers we?re obsessed with understanding the way customers think. So my small biz superhero power would be having the ability to read minds.

CLEMSON Sports journalists covering the Penn State sex abuse scandal posted commentary on Twitter that was inherently biased, Clemson University and University of Louisville researchers say.

Their study explored how sports journalists used Twitter to develop and promote their stories during the scandal. Their research findings were published Thursday in the International Journal of Sport Communication.

While sports journalists used Twitter in ways that were similar to traditional media channels, a key finding was that they posted commentary that reflected a personal involvement that lacked any pretense of impartiality and objectivity.

"The behavior of the 151 sports journalists analyzed appear to have blurred personal and professional boundaries as they mocked fans and promoted their competitors," said Marion E. Hambrick, assistant professor in the health and sport sciences department at Louisville.

This personal investment also appeared as sports journalists had highly charged interaction with fans. Given the sensitivity of the story, coupled with their personal investment, these interactions often were confrontational.

"Twitter seems to elevate sports journalists' willingness to step outside of their professional spheres," said Jimmy Sanderson, assistant professor in Clemson's communication studies department. "Many of the journalists uttered commentary that would be unlikely to appear in more traditional platforms, and in this respect, sports journalists seem to be mimicking athletes in creating social media controversies."

Social media have become the standard when sports news breaks and where media consumers turn to obtain the most current information and commentary. However, in the rush to be first with a scoop, there has been a rise of inaccurate information being reported on Twitter, according to Sanderson and Hambrick.

"Sports journalists must maintain a viable presence in the social media realm or risk becoming irrelevant with sports media audiences," said Sanderson. "The speed and acceleration that Twitter provides creates a challenge among sports journalists and media organizations for being first vs. being right."

Mainstream sports media outlets face increasing competition from adversaries who may not follow established journalistic procedures. How media organizations respond to this challenge may be dictated by whether they choose to be first or accurate when reporting news.

Sanderson and Hambrick are conducting additional research to more closely investigate the personal and professional boundaries of sports journalists on Twitter and determine how mainstream media organizations respond to the social media challenge with their online competitors.

In '85 video, Romney says Bain will 'harvest' companies for profit

In a video made public today, but recorded sometime in the summer of 1985, Mitt Romney explains in frank terms how his then newly-minted private equity firm planned on making money.

"Bain Capital is an investment partnership which was formed to invest in startup companies and ongoing companies, then to take an active hand in managing them and hopefully, five to eight years later, to harvest them at a significant profit," Romney tells employees of Bain & Company, the consulting firm that spawned the new venture.

The clip, which was given to Mother Jones by a former Bain employee, comes off a 1998 CD-ROM released to commemorate the parent company's 25th anniversary.

Romney's campaign staked itself early on to a simple argument: Success in the private sector economy and, by definition, an understanding of how jobs are "created," made Romney the best person to steer the country out of its economic malaise.

Campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg defended Romney's record at Bain, saying in an email today that the candidate "helped build Bain Capital by turning around broken companies, creating and saving thousands of jobs. The problem today is that President Obama hasn't been able to turn around our economy in the same way."

But the president's campaign has for months argued that Romney actions at Bain showed a cold-blooded disregard for American workers, either by outsourcing jobs as companies were being restructured or simply selling off failing investments.

"If you're head of a large equity firm or hedge fund, your job is to make money. It's not to create jobs. It's not even to create successful businesses. It's to make sure you're maximizing returns for your investor," President Obama said during an interview with CBS in July, seeking to create a divide between Romney's private success and his potential to manage public economic policy.

Romney faced similar criticism during the Republican primary debates, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry accused Bain of engaging in "vulture capitalism."

Romney countered then, claiming that, "net-net," the firm had actually added more than 100,000 jobs over more than 25 years.

"There's a steel company called Steel Dynamics in Indiana, thousands of jobs there," Romney said. "Bright Horizons Children's Centers, about 15,000 jobs there; Sports Authority, about 15,000 jobs there, Staples alone, 90,000 employed. That's a business that we helped start from the ground up."

Fact-checkers have cast some doubt on those figures, noting that Romney doesn't account for jobs lost when companies went bust, but Bain's tangled web of interests and investments makes it almost impossible to calculate a defining statistic.

TEXT-S&P affirms SMRT Corp. Ltd. 'AAA' ratings

(The following statement was released by the rating agency)

Sept 27 -

Overview

-- We have revised our assessment of the likelihood of extraordinary

support from the government for Singapore-based rail operator SMRT to

"extremely high" from "very high."

-- We are affirming our 'AAA' long-term corporate credit rating and

'axAAA/axA-1+' ASEAN regional scale ratings on SMRT, and the 'AAA' issue

rating on the company's S$150 million medium-term notes due 2014.

-- We are lowering our stand-alone credit profile on SMRT to 'aa-' from

'aa' on our expectation of financial weakness.

-- The stable outlook reflects: (1) our expectation that SMRT will

maintain its dominant position in the Singapore transport industry; and (2)

the risk that its financial risk profile will weaken to "modest" from

"minimal"; but key ratios should remain above our downgrade triggers.

Rating Action

On Sept. 27, 2012, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services affirmed its 'AAA'

long-term corporate credit ratings on Singapore-based rail operator SMRT Corp.

Ltd. The outlook is stable. At the same time, we affirmed the 'axAAA'

long-term and 'axA-1+' short-term ASEAN regional scale ratings on SMRT. We

also affirmed all the ratings on SMRT's related debt issues and programs.

Rationale

We affirmed the ratings on SMRT to reflect our assessment that the likelihood

of extraordinary government support for the company has increased. In our

view, this support will moderate SMRT's weakened stand-alone credit profile

(SACP). We have lowered the SACP to 'aa-' from 'aa' due to the risk that the

company's financial strength will weaken over the next two years.

In accordance with our criteria for rating government-related entities, we

have revised our assessment of the role between SMRT and the government of

Singapore (unsolicited rating AAA/Stable/A-1+; axAAA/axA-1+) to "critical"

from "very important." The change reflects our view that SMRT now has greater

political importance for Singapore's public transport policy than we

previously expected. This is demonstrated by the government's intense scrutiny

and interventions during rail breakdowns in December 2011. Since then, the

government through its regulating agency, the Land Transport Authority (LTA),

has more directly assured commuters of tighter regulatory supervision over the

quality of services that rail operators provide. LTA has also articulated

better co-ordination with SMRT for upgrading the aging rail network while

maintaining high operational efficiencies.

We believe that SMRT's ability to provide reliable train services is critical

to maintaining Singapore's seamless transport infrastructure. The company has

about 2 million passengers on a daily basis (more than one-third of the

Singapore population in 2012). We expect passenger levels to rise as it

extends the network, and see a favorable industry outlook.

We lowered the SACP because we believe that over the next two years SMRT's

financial risk profile will weaken to "modest" from the current "minimal," as

our criteria defined those terms. For example, in our base-case scenario, we

estimate that the company's adjusted debt-to-EBITDA ratio could deteriorate to

1.5x-2.0x over the next two years from the current negligible net debt

position. In our view, the deterioration will come from SMRT's significant

investment in capital expenditure to upgrade its aging rail infrastructure. We

may raise the SACP again if SMRT's adjusted debt-to-EBITDA ratio and other

credit protection measures recover over the next two years.

Ongoing margin pressure continues to constrain SMRT's ability to generate cash

flow. The pressure on the margin stems from rising wages, higher energy costs,

and increased repair and maintenance expenses as the company conducts more

rigorous routine checks to reduce rail breakdowns and inefficiencies.

Rental from SMRT's properties and advertising revenue should continue to grow

as a percentage of total revenue over the next two to three years. But we do

not believe these segments could significantly shift the group's earnings mix.

We view SMRT's business risk profile as "excellent," based on its dominant

market position in Singapore's rail sector. The profile underpins the

company's stand-alone credit quality.

We understand that SMRT has high spending requirements under a Singapore

dollar (S$) 900 million asset renewal and replacement plan. But in our

base-case scenario, we expect the company's capital spending burden to ease in

fiscal 2013 (ending March 2014) because of timely cost sharing with the

government. We have adjusted the company's debt with cash and short-term

investments in excess of S$40 million, which is the minimum cash we expect

SMRT will need to operate.

In our base-case scenario, we also expect an adjusted ratio of funds from

operations to debt of 60%-80% over the next two years, which is above our

downgrade triggers. We base our estimates on our assumption that passenger

numbers will rise 5%-8% after all Circle Line stations fully open in fiscal

2012 (ending March 2013) and that business conditions will remain favorable.

We expect SMRT's EBITDA margin to drop to about 25% in the year ending March

2013, compared with 28% last year. It should then gradually recover, due to

steady revenue growth and the company's efforts to manage operating expenses.

Agriculture is the direct driver for worldwide deforestation

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A new synthesis on drivers of deforestation and forest degradation was published during the Bangkok climate change negotiations in September by researchers from Canada and from Wageningen University, Netherlands. The report stresses the importance of knowing what drives deforestation and forest degradation, in order to be able to design and monitor effective REDD+ policies to halt it.

Agriculture is estimated to be the direct driver for around 80% of deforestation worldwide. In Latin America, commercial agriculture is the main direct driver, responsible for 2/3 of all cut forests, while in Africa and tropical Asia commercial agriculture and subsistence agriculture both account for one third of deforestation. Mining, infrastructure and urban expansion are important but less prominent drivers worldwide. It is concluded that economic growth based on the export of primary commodities and an increasing demand for timber and agricultural products in a globalizing economy are critical indirect drivers.

Degradation of forest means a decrease in quality of forest, and is in over 70% of cases caused by (commercial) timber extraction and logging activities in Latin America and tropical and sub-tropical Asia. In Africa, fuel wood collection, charcoal production, and, to a lesser extent, livestock grazing in forests are the most important drivers of degradation.

The synthesis report 'Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation' sums up currently available knowledge from the literature on drivers, worldwide and by country, and gives recommendations to policymakers involved in the on-going international climate negotiations, as well as country-level plans and interventions. The viability of REDD+ depends on altering business-as-usual activity in sectors currently driving greenhouse gas emissions from forests, it is concluded. The report distinguishes between direct drivers, that directly cause deforestation and forest degradation, and indirect drivers, forces at the background such as changing market prices, population growth or policies and governance.

The report concludes it is important for forested tropical countries to regularly assess and monitor drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, in order to be able to design effective REDD+ policies. The types of drivers have great influence on the forest carbon impacts and the choice of data sources and methods used to measure them. Also, understanding forest change patterns and underlying causes are important for developing forest reference (emission) levels, necessary for REDD+ implementation.

Countries largely define REDD+ strategies and interventions to deal with national and local scale drivers, but face problems addressing international drivers and acknowledge that international pressure will increase. The report offers solutions for how countries can decouple economic growth from deforestation, investigating the range of options countries have to address drivers at various scales.

The report, was supported by the UK and Norwegian governments, is available at http://www.decc.gov.uk/assets/decc/11/tackling-climate-change/international-climate-change/6316-drivers-deforestation-report.pdf
