Amid the?increased speculation?surrounding Silicon Valley darling Pinterest's forthcoming revenue model, competitor Fancy, a social photo-clipping service popular among the style-conscious set, has been quietly working on revenue ideas of its own. Previously, the service was doling out coupon code to users who "fancy'd" images belonging to specific merchants, but today, the site is diving head-first into social commerce. Starting now, Fancy users will not only be able to post, like ("fancy") and share photos of things they find inspiring, they'll also be able to purchase them directly on Fancy's website itself.

Megaupload co-founder granted bail, New Zealand judge rules he's not a flight risk

After being denied twice, Megupload co-founder Kim Dotcom has been granted bail by a New Zealand judge, who ruled he isn't in fact a flight risk. To date, the court's rationale for keeping Dotcom behind bars has been that he might flee to his native Germany in a bid to avoid extradition to the US, where he stands accused of generating more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and causing more than half a billion dollars in copyright damage. And though prosecutors had previously argued that Doctom has multiple passports and bank accounts and a "history of fleeing criminal charges," district court Judge N.R. Dawson concluded the risk of him taking off has been overstated. In particular, he noted, Dotcom has a wife, three children and another on the way, and that "the US government has not shown since [his] arrest that he has access to any money." For now, he's been confined to the grounds of his mansion, though he's not permitted to enter the house itself. While there, he must wear an electronic tracking device on his ankle, and access to the internet (and helicopters!) is forbidden. And that, readers, is where he shall remain -- at least until the extradition hearing begins, likely sometime this summer.

Reverend William E. Flippin, Jr.: Exposition of John 1:5 from T.S. Eliot poem "Ash Wednesday from Gerontian"

With ash and soot we begin this Lenten season with confession and a reflection from the following poem:

"If the lost world is lost,
If the unheard, unspoken
Word is unspoken, unheard;
Still is the unspoken word, the Word unheard,
The word without a word, the Word within
The word and for the world;
And the light shone in darkness and
Against the Word the unstilled world still whirled
About the centre of the silent word."
-- T.S. Eliot, Collected Poems 1909-1962, 92

This poem was written 11 years after Eliot's 1927 Christian conversion. Clearly, the image of the silent but living word, uttered into and uncomprehending darkness, continued to unsettle him. In "Ash Wednesday," section V, Eliot recognizes being bound by the world's incomprehension by describing himself as a pilgrim caught between "dying and birth." He tries to settle himself down from the world's distractions to hear the word, or to recapture his zeal of life since
his conversion 11 years earlier.

As we commence our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, I ponder on the metaphors that are prevalent in the Gospel of John of "darkness" and "light." These images are metaphors that describe the moral conditions of humanity, which displays our sinful proclivities, a need for heavenly wisdom, righteousness and truth. Because of our sin, we as humans face a terrible antagonism, a fearful negative that presents us a constant struggle of being seekers of the divine light. The ancient light which broke over the childhood of humanity, the brighter beams
which fell on consciences that are misguided by "works righteousness" as the means to achieve salvation. The light which was focused in the incarnate Logos and diffused in all the "entrance of the Divine Word" into the heart of humanity.

From this poem, our hope in our Lenten journey comes from the first line quoted referencing John chapter one "If the lost world is lost, if the unheard spoken, word is unspoken unheard; still something remains."

Even in our "darkness," or failure to comprehend the light, still there is a vibrant word in the world's care. "Light shineth in darkness" (verse 5) and the darkness apprehended it not. Although the darkness (our sinful nature) is disastrous and as a Lutheran I would say concupiscent, we have life from one who from eternity has within himself the potency of this transition. We can describe this power and potency by affirming "The light shone in darkness and against the Word the unstilled world still whirled," but even as it whirled, focused on its own empty clatter, it whirled. "About the centre of the silent word."

US drafts plan to fight feared Alzheimer's disease

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration declared Alzheimer's "one of the most-feared health conditions" on Wednesday as it issued a draft of the nation's first strategy to fight the ominous rise in the mind-destroying disease.

More than 5 million Americans already have Alzheimer's or similar dementias, a toll expected to reach up to 16 million by 2050, along with skyrocketing medical and nursing home bills, because the population is aging so rapidly.

The government's top goal: Find some effective ways to treat Alzheimer's by 2025. That is an ambitious quest. Today's treatments only temporarily ease symptoms. Scientists know that Alzheimer's brews for years before symptoms appear, but work to find better medications or at least stall the disease's emergence has been frustratingly slow.

Whether scientists can meet that deadline or not, the first draft of the National Alzheimer's Plan also makes clear that overwhelmed families need help right away to care for affected loved ones.

Moreover, as many as half of today's Alzheimer's sufferers have not been formally diagnosed, and the draft in part blames stigma and misinformation.

Among the draft's planned steps:

?A major public awareness campaign to help people know the early warning signs of Alzheimer's and what to do.

?Educate doctors and other health workers about how to recognize Alzheimer's, what medications are available now that can help with the disease's symptoms, and what social services may help families to cope.

?Improve early detection, in part by determining the best cognitive screening to offer during Medicare's new annual wellness visit.

?Improve training of caregivers, so they know what resources are available and how to handle common behavior problems of dementia. Research shows that caregivers given such training are able to keep their loved ones at home for far longer.

?Study how to address the health needs of stressed and isolated caregivers.

Then there's the goal of better treatments. The National Institutes of Health spends about $450 million a year on dementia research. This month, the Obama administration announced it would add an extra $50 million to that tab this year, and seek $80 million more to spend on Alzheimer's research in 2013.

It plans to spend about $26 million on some of the plan's other provisions.

For comparison, the government spends nearly $3 billion on AIDS research; about 1.1 million Americans are living with the AIDS virus.

Wednesday's draft is open for public comment through March, and the government's Alzheimer's advisory council is sure to make changes before a final strategy is issued this year. But some of the work is not waiting: The NIH, for example, is bringing together top Alzheimer's scientists in May to discuss the most promising leads for better treatment.

Some members of that advisory council called the draft a good first step.

"They've covered the right topics. What is needed now is more detail," said Alzheimer's Association President Harry Johns. "There's real recognition at this point that Alzheimer's is devastating for not only the individual but for the families and caregivers."

"Today, with the strong commitment of federal leaders and louder outcry from the public, the urgency of the Alzheimer's disease crisis is being recognized and acted upon," said Eric J. Hall, president of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
