Scientists discover new belt of radiation around Earth

NASA's twin Van Allen space probes, which are studying the?Earth's radiation belts, made the cosmic find. The surprising discovery ? a new, albeit temporary, radiation belt around Earth ? reveals how much remains unknown about outer space, even those regions closest to the planet, researchers added.

After humanity began exploring space, the first major find made there were the?Van Allen radiation belts, zones of magnetically trapped, highly energetic charged particles first discovered in 1958.

"They were something we thought we mostly understood by now, the first discovery of the Space Age," said lead study author Daniel Baker, a space scientist at the University of Colorado.

These belts were believed to consist of two rings: an inner zone made up of both high-energy electrons and very energetic positive ions that remains stable in intensity over the course of years to decades; and an outer zone comprised mostly of high-energy electrons whose intensity swings over the course of hours to days depending primarily on the influence from the solar wind, the flood of radiation streaming from the sun. The discovery of a temporary new radiation belt now has scientists reviewing the Van Allen radiation belt models to understand how it occurred.

Radiation rings around Earth

The giant amounts of radiation the Van Allen belts generate can pose serious risks for satellites. To learn more about them, NASA launched twin spacecraft, the Van Allen probes, in the summer of 2012.

The satellites were armed with a host of sensors to thoroughly analyze the plasma, energetic particles, magnetic fields and plasma waves in these belts with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution.

Unexpectedly, the probes revealed a new radiation belt surrounding Earth, a third one made of super-high-energy electrons embedded in the outer Van Allen belt about 11,900 to 13,900 miles (19,100 to 22,300 kilometers) above the planet's surface. This stable ring of?space radiation?apparently formed on Sept. 2? and lasted for more than four weeks.

"The feature was so surprising, I initially foolishly thought the instruments on the probes weren't working properly, but I soon realized the lab had built such wonderful instruments that there wasn't anything wrong with them, so what we saw must be true," Baker said.

This newfound radiation belt then abruptly and almost completely disappeared on Oct. 1. It was apparently disrupted by an interplanetary shock wave caused by a spike in solar wind speeds.

"More than five decades after the original discovery of these radiation belts, you can still find new unexpected things there," Baker said. "It's a delight to be able to find new things in an old domain. We now need to re-evaluate them thoroughly both theoretically and observationally."

A radiation mystery

It remains uncertain how this temporary radiation belt arose. Van Allen mission scientists suspect it was likely created by the?solar wind?tearing away the outer Van Allen belt.

"It looks like its existence may have been bookended by solar disturbances," Baker said.

Future study of the Van Allen belts can reveal if such temporary rings of radiation are common or rare.

"Do these occur frequently, or did we get lucky and see a very rare circumstance that happens only once in a while?" Baker said. "And what other unusual revelations might come now that we are really looking at these radiation belts with new, modern tools?"

The scientists detailed their findings online Feb. 28 in the journal Science.

Sinkholes are common, but rarely catastrophic

A Florida man is missing after an apparent sinkhole opened in his bedroom in the middle of the night, sucking him and his bed deep into the earth. As frightening as it sounds, sinkholes happen all the time, according to geologists. Usually, though, they are slow-motion processes that can take years.

Sinkholes of the sort that swallowed the Florida man form when slightly acidic groundwater dissolves limestone or similar rock that lies beneath the soil creating a large void or cavities. When the overlying ceiling can no longer support the weight of the soil and whatever is on top of it, the earth collapses into the cavity.?

"Then you have the depression at the land surface, which is the sinkhole," Jonathan Arthur, director of the Florida Geological Survey, told NBC News.

If a house or road sits on top of the sinkhole, it too falls into the earth, as did the Florida man who fell into a hole estimated at 20-feet-deep by 20-feet-wide.?


"They heard a sound they described as a car crash emanating from the bedroom," Hillsborourgh County Fire Chief Ron Rogers said at a Friday morning news conference?describing the reaction of the man's family. ?They rushed in. All they could see was part of a mattress sticking out of the hole. The floor of the room had opened."

A look at some of the most amazing sinkholes around the world.

Technically, the event in Tampa has not been ruled a sinkhole, "although that is what most people believe it to be," Arthur said. "A little further site geology and geotechnical work would be needed to absolutely confirm its nature."

These types of sudden sinkholes are so-called cover-collapse sinkholes. When they occur, a hole typically forms and grows over a period of minutes to hours. Sediments may continue to slump down the sides of the sinkhole for several days and erosion of the edges can last even longer.?

At the apparent sinkhole near Tampa the victim "could be drawn into the water with the debris falling on top of him, so he wouldn't be able to possibly escape from that," Grenville Draper, a professor in the department of Earth and the environment at Florida International University, told NBC News.

"That part of it is very tragic," he added. "I've never heard of there being a fatality associated with these before. They do occur rather suddenly, but we're not talking like an earthquake. You do have minutes or even an hour to take action to save yourself."?

Cover-collapse sinkholes are quite rare, according to the Florida Sinkhole Research Institute. A preliminary assessment of 1,400 sinkholes found only or two. More common is the slow, gradual subsidence of land, forming bowl-shaped depressions at the surface in a process than can last years.

Sinkholes can reach more than 100 feet deep into the earth and spread across several hundred feet. Others are tiny ? a few feet across and maybe a foot deep. Some hold water and form ponds.?

"A very small percentage of sinkholes that form actually have some adverse effect on human life and infrastructure," Arthur said. "However, it is those that make the news, whether it is under a roadway or a home."

In addition to Florida, other U.S. hotspots for sinkholes include Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Pennsylvania, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.?

Just because one sinkhole opens, does not necessarily mean another nearby is imminent. They are usually isolated events, the Florida Geological Survey notes. However, certain events such as a hurricane following a period of drought can trigger a series of sinkholes to occur within minutes to hours of each other, Arthur noted.

This happened in the wake of Tropical Storm Debby in June 2012. "It came across Florida after a period of drought where water levels in the ground were lower and then we had the massive influx of rain, over 20 inches in some areas, and that change in the climate and the groundwater levels triggered hundreds of sinkholes across the state over a very, very short period of time," Arthur said.

Human activity can also cause sinkholes to develop. Excessive pumping of groundwater, for example, can cause the soil to settle. Others form under the weight of runoff-storage ponds, which cause the underground support material to collapse.?

Sinkholes are most often found in seven states, including Florida where the ground recently collapsed in Seffner, Fla., near Tampa, sending 37-year-old Jeffrey Bush and his entire bedroom into the earth. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

Biologists compare new bees to 100-year-old records

Feb. 28, 2013 ? Laura Burkle and her colleagues captured 2,778 bees while retracing the muddy steps of a scientist who studied the interactions between bees and flowering plants more than a century ago.

Occasionally stung, but considering herself lucky to have access to the rich historic records that guided her field work, the Montana State University ecologist and her collaborators have now published their results in the journal Science.

Burkle conducted her bee study in the forests of southern Illinois while she was a postdoctoral researcher at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Now at MSU for the past two years and planning a major ecological study between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park, Burkle and her co-authors compared the bees and flowering plants that existed in 2009 and 2010 with those that existed in the late 1800s and early 1900s around Carlinville, Ill.

The researchers discovered that the area has lost many species of bees and flowering plants over the 120 years since professor Charles Robertson first surveyed the area, Burkle said. Also lost were many interactions between the bees and flowers.

Despite the loss, however, the bees and plants have been surprisingly resilient in the face of warmer temperatures and changing land use, Burkle said. The forests that once grew 10 miles outside of Carlinville are fragments of what they were when Robertson drove his horse and buggy to collect specimens. Fields of corn have replaced acres of trees and prairie. Natural areas have been converted to agricultural, commercial or residential uses. Winter and spring temperatures have risen an average of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

"The good news is that these systems and the way they are structured make them really resilient to change," Burkle said. "But there's been so much change that resiliency has been compromised."

Co-author Tiffany Knight, Burkle's faculty adviser for the study, said, "Plants are an important resource for humans, providing food, fiber and the backbone for all other ecosystem services. Most plants rely on animal pollinators for their reproduction. There is concern that human changes to the environment are disrupting plant-pollinator interactions, but our study is the first that has been able to look at this problem using historical data.

"One of our significant findings is that climate change has resulted in mismatches between plants and their historic pollinators, such that insects are active during times when plants are not in bloom," Knight said. "This is likely because plants and insects respond to different environment cues, and thus, we expect that mismatches between plants and their historic pollinators due to climate change is important across the globe."

The scientist who inspired the recent study was a Harvard professor before moving to Illinois to retire. When he discovered the woods around Carlinville, however, he resumed his academic life as a professor at the local Blackburn College. He collected most of his data from 1887 to 1897, but continued into 1917.

"He loved it," Burkle said. "That was his full-time passion."

Burkle learned about Robertson while looking for a research project to pursue as a postdoctoral researcher. Since Carlinville and St. Louis are just 1 ? hours apart, Burkle and Knight decided to follow up Robertson's study with their own.

They spent the springs of 2009 and 2010 doing fieldwork around Carlinville. Generally working in the woods between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. when bees are most likely to fly, the researchers slogged through the forests looking for the first flowering plants of the season. Then they captured the bees that pollinated those flowers and identified them under the microscopes Burkle set up in their Carlinville apartment.

In 477 hours over two years, the researchers collected 3,620 "floral visitors," Burkle said. Of those, 2,778 were bees and the rest were mostly flies and butterflies. The plant that attracted the largest number of bees -- 923 individuals and 33 species -- was Spring Beauty, a small herbaceous plant. Second most popular plant was the Great Waterleaf.

In addition to their and Robertson's specimens, Burkle and Knight compared their findings to those of co-author John Marlin from the University of Illinois. Marlin, who had gathered data from the Carlinville area in the 1970s, provided intermediate-year information that was "incredibly helpful," Burkle said.

Burkle conducted her research with a $75,000 RAPID grant from the National Science Foundation.

Burkle's next study will begin this summer and look at disturbances -- such as from recent and more historic fires -- to see how plant and pollinator communities re-assemble across Montana between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks.

The suite of species that live in Montana and Illinois are entirely different, but some of the same issues apply, Burkle said.

Knight said, "I would expect that the effects of climate change on plant-pollinator interactions are even greater in some locations, such as high elevation sites in the Rocky Mountains that have experienced more dramatic changes in climate than our Midwestern site."

She added that Burkle's expertise on identifying bees and analyzing plant-pollinator networks were crucial to the success of the bee project.

"I miss working with her at Washington University, but I think she is in an excellent location to make new and significant contributions to the field of pollination biology," Knight said.

The jetliner of the future is facing problems here and now.

On Tuesday, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner destined for Tokyo had to return to the gate at Boston?s Logan International Airport because of a fuel leak.

It was the second technical problem faced by the much-celebrated aircraft in two days. On Monday, a battery used to power another 787 when the engine is turned off on the ground caught on fire.

The Dreamliner has taken to the skies the last year with fanfare as it?s the first commercial aircraft to be made largely of lightweight carbon composites rather than conventional aluminum and steel. Airlines around the world have jumped at the chance to buy the fuel- and cost-efficient planes, and Boeing has plans to roll out another 800 or more of them.

But it has had problems from the start with multiple preproduction delays. And last month, United Airlines and Qatar Airways had to divert or ground planes because of electrical issues on an aircraft that relies more on electricity than air pressure.

The incidents have prompted some analysts to question the plane?s reliability.

?While I don?t think this is yet a 787 fleet-grounding issue, it does raise questions about ? quality control,? says Robert Mann, an airline analyst with R.W. Mann and Co.

Tuesday?s incident involved Japan Airlines Flight 007 to Tokyo. As it was taxiing at about 12:25 p.m. for a 1 p.m. departure, the pilot of another plane noticed fuel leaking from the left wing, says Matthew Brelis, a spokesman for Massport, which runs Logan airport.

The plane was towed back to the gate, where maintenance crews and a contractor cleaned up what is estimated to be about 40 gallons of fuel.

Brelis says that it is not uncommon for pilots to dump fuel from time to time. The fuel was leaking from a vent, which is an area where such dumping would happen. ?It?s not like it was a leak in the fuel line,? he says.

Passengers were deplaned and held in a secure area until the plane was able to take off at 3:47 p.m., says Japan Airlines spokeswoman Carol Anderson.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it is looking into both incidents.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is not going to investigate the incident, spokesman Eric Weiss says. ?It is a maintenance issue, not an accident,? he says.

The NTSB did, however, send three investigators to Boston to investigate Monday?s fire involving Japan Airlines Flight 008, which landed around 10 a.m. Maintenance and cleaning crews detected smoke in the cabin after passengers had gotten off the plane.

On Tuesday, the NTSB said in a preliminary report that the battery had caught on fire in the plane?s auxiliary power unit, which is used when the jet?s engines are turned off.

Firefighters discovered a fire in the electronics and equipment bay near the power unit?s battery box, the NTSB?s report says.

The fire was extinguished in about 40 minutes. A firefighter had minor injuries. No passengers were injured.

This is an important year for Boeing as it tries to recover from production delays and deliver the aircraft. So far, 49 have been delivered. The aircraft debuted with All Nippon Airways in October 2011. United Airlines became the first U.S. airline to fly the plane in November.

?TEETHING PROBLEMS?

The latest setbacks unnerved Wall Street. Boeing shares lost $ 2 to $ 74.13 on Tuesday, a 2.6% drop. In two days concerns about the Dreamliner have helped shave $ 2.7 billion off Boeing?s stock market value to $ 55.9 billion.

It is not the first time a Dreamliner has had a fuel leak. The Federal Aviation Administration last month ordered inspections of all 787 Dreamliners in service in the U.S. to make sure that fuel-line connectors had been installed correctly after two foreign airlines reported fuel leaks.

Problems also were reported on United and Qatar airlines? Dreamliners last month.

A United flight Dec. 4 from Houston to Newark made an emergency landing in New Orleans after a power generator failed, and another flight Dec. 17 developed electrical issues. Qatar Airlines grounded one of its Dreamliners on Dec. 13 because of concerns about the electronics.

Those incidents didn?t spark NTSB investigations. But the NTSB did make two urgent safety recommendations Sept. 14 to repair General Electric engines that are on Dreamliners and other planes.

The recommendations came after a July 28 engine failure occurred during a taxi test and caused a grass fire at the airport in Charleston, S.C.

Boeing spokeswoman Lori Gunter said Tuesday that the company was looking into this week?s incident. But, she said, Monday?s fire did not seem connected to December?s issues.

?Nothing that we?ve seen in this case indicates a relationship to any previous 787 power-system events, which involved power panel faults,? Gunter says.

She says Boeing is cooperating with the NTSB on Monday?s fire and previous events. Gunter did not comment on Tuesday?s fuel leak.

?Before providing more detail, we will give our technical teams the time they need to do a thorough job and ensure we are dealing with facts not speculation,? she says.

John Hansman, professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT, says he does not think the incidents should prompt airlines to give up on the Dreamliner.

?Teething problems like this are not unusual for a new aircraft like this which is pushing the envelope in terms of technology,? he says.

Tuesday?s fuel leak seems to have nothing to do with the previous day?s fire, Hansman says.

He says there are three possible reasons for the fire involving the battery, which is used to start up the backup engine on the ground to power heating, air conditioning or other systems.

It could have been a manufacturing problem with the battery, it could have been used incorrectly or it could be a design problem, Hansman says.

?Regardless of what the problem is, it will be fairly easy to fix,? he says. ?It?s not something that puts the overall airplane at risk.?

Robert Fiegl, chairman of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, says he is surprised by the number of problems the Dreamliner has had.

But, he says, ?Brand new aircraft can be expected to encounter some ?new technology? problems simply due to the lack of historical data or experience attributable to not knowing where the latent problems are yet.?
