Mandolinist, neurosurgeon among winners of 2012 "Genius" grants

NEW YORK | Mon Oct 1, 2012 10:53pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A bluegrass musician and a pediatric surgeon were among 23 of the world's most creative and original thinkers to be awarded no-strings-attached $500,000 "genius" grants this year, a U.S. charitable organization said on Monday.

Also among the 2012 MacArthur Foundation fellows are a celebrated fiction writer, a Washington Post reporter and a Boston man who makes some of the finest violin bows the modern world has ever seen.

Since the program was initiated in 1981, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has provided grants to hundreds of "fellows," with the aim of providing scientists, scholars, artists, activists and others with the means and freedom to pursue their creativity wherever it leads.

Anonymous nominators and selection committees decide who gets the grants, and recipients usually do not know they are even being considered unless they win. The grant is made over a five-year period and can be used however the winners see fit.

Each year's list of MacArthur fellows is comprised of a rich mosaic of achievement across a variety of specialized fields. Among the 2012 grant winners are:

* Fiction writer Junot Diaz, 43, whose groundbreaking novel ?The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" was described by the New York Times as "so original it can only be described as Mario Vargas Llosa meets ?Star Trek' meets David Foster Wallace meets Kanye West."

* Mexican documentary filmmaker Natalia Almada, 37, whose work, according to the foundation, captures the "complex and nuanced views of Mexican history, politics and culture in insightful and poetic works that affirm the potency of documentary film as both an art form and a tool for social change."

* Mandolinist and composer Chris Thile, 31, of New York, a groundbreaking master of bluegrass who has composed mandolin concertos, and recorded with a range of artists including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Dolly Parton, Jack White and the band Bela Fleck.

* Astronomer and physicist Olivier Guyon, 36, who designs telescopes that "play a critical role in the search for Earth-like planets outside our solar system," according to the foundation.

* Journalist David Finkel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post writer who reported from Iraq and won plaudits for his coverage of U.S. efforts to forge democracy in the most lawless corners of Yemen.

* Columbia University mathematician Maria Chudnovsky, 35, who is "investigating the fundamental principles of graph theory?and other major branches of mathematics."

* Bow maker Benoit Rolland, whose experimentation with new designs and materials to create bows for the violin, viola and cello rivals "the quality of prized nineteen century bows and meets the artistic demands of today's musicians."

* Boston Children's Hospital pediatric neurosurgeon Benjamin Warf, 54, who according to the foundation is "revolutionizing the treatment of intracranial diseases in very young children."

Mladic's Trial: Witness Recalls Markale Massacre :: Balkan Insight

Sujelman Crncalo described how his wife went to the Markale market in the morning of August 28, 1995.

?She did not return by 11, as we agreed, so I went to look for her... I will never forget that image... The street in front of Markale was covered in blood, from end to end, body parts everywhere, shoes... parts of clothing on the fence... blood trail left as they dragged the wounded,? recalled Crncalo.

After he did not find his wife on the list of the wounded in the hospital, Crncalo was sent to the morgue.

?I immediately recognised her among seven bodies. They were all women. She was the third in a row, ? said the witness.

According to the indictment against Mladic and earlier verdicts of the Hague Tribunal, the shell was fired at Markale from positions of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps of the Army of Republika Srpska.

Mladic, who was arrested in May of last year, has pleaded not guilty to charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war during the Bosnian conflict between 1992 and 1995.

He is charged with genocide in Srebrenica in 1995 and in several other Bosnian municipalities in 1992, the expulsion of Bosniaks and Croats from territories under the control of the Bosnian Serbs, terrorizing Sarajevo citizens with a campaign of shelling and sniping and taking international soldiers as hostages in 1995.

Crncalo said that the life during the Sarajevo siege was hard because of daily shelling and sniper attacks and because of shortage of water, food and electricity.

Crncalo testified that in July 1992 Bosnian Serb authorities expelled him and another Bosniaks from Pale, transporting them by buses to Sarajevo.

In June of the same year, the witness had heard the then president of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadzic saying at the rally at Pale that the ?best way to defend Serb houses ? is to attack Muslim houses.?

Prior to that, according to Crncalo, Nikola Koljevic, one of the Bosnian Serb political leaders, had told local Bosniaks that ?Serbs do not want to live with them?, while the local police commander told them that he could not guarantee their safety.

Crncalo said he had to transfer the ownership of his house in writing to a Serb woman.

During cross-examination, Mladic?s lawyer Dejan Ivetic pointed out that the contract allowing the use of the house did not include ownership of Crnacalo?s house. The witness responded that he had to sign the contract immediately before leaving for Sarajevo and that he did not analyse its content.

The defence suggested that Crncalo and other Bosniaks from Pale left voluntarily, but the witness denied that, saying that he would never leave his home voluntarily.

At the start of the hearing, the Trial Chamber forbade Mladic to speak in the courtroom, with an explanation that at least on five occasions he loudly and inappropriately addressed witnesses or commented on their statements.

?According to the new rules, which would be in effect throughout the process, Mladic will be allowed to address his defence only during the recess and pass on written instructions to his lawyers in the courtroom,? said the presiding judge Alphons Orie.

The trial is scheduled to resume on Monday, October 1.

Mailed Kits May Prompt Parents to Protect Kids From Sun - Drugs.com

SUNDAY Sept. 30, 2012 -- Mailing sun-protection kits, which contain information about the dangers of exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays and skin cancer, as well as swim shirts, hats and sunscreen, increases the number of people who take steps to protect their children from sun exposure, according to a new study.

Researchers from the Colorado School of Public Health and the University of Colorado Cancer Center found that the kits prompted more people to provide their kids with sun-protective clothing, hats and sunscreen. The kits also encouraged more people to avoid midday sun.

The investigators noted that because the kits were inexpensive and delivered by mail, they could be widely distributed.

"This is a low-cost, effective intervention that could be an important component in efforts to reduce sun exposure in children during the years that they acquire much of their risk for skin cancer," the study's first author, Lori Crane, investigator at the Cancer Center and chair of the department of community and behavioral health at the Colorado School of Public Health, said in a news release from the center.

The study involved 676 children, all 6-year-olds, and their parents. All participants were surveyed to assess their level of sun-protective behaviors as well as parents' knowledge about melanoma and their understanding of their child's lifetime risk for this form of skin cancer. Skin exams also revealed the children's level of tanning and number of potentially dangerous moles they had. Half of the participating families were randomly selected to receive sun-protection kits in the mail in April and May of 2005, 2006 and 2007.

The study, published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, revealed that those who received the sun-protection kits gained more awareness about sun exposure and had greater adherence to sun-protective behaviors. The most significant behavioral changes the people reported were those emphasized in each yearly kit, the researchers noted.

"After we emphasized long clothing in the spring of 2005, we saw a difference in clothing behavior in the summers of 2005 and 2006, not in 2007. Then after emphasizing hats in 2006, we saw a difference in hat use that year. And then after highlighting shade in 2007, we saw a corresponding increase in parents' awareness and use of shade as a sun-protective behavior," Crane explained in the news release.

More research is needed to determine how the kits affect children's risk for skin cancer and if it changes behavior in the long term, the study authors added.

The researchers warned in the news release that children and teens who develop a blistering sunburn have a more than doubled risk of skin cancer in adulthood, and long-term sun exposure accumulated over many years may be equally harmful.

We were told by locals to visit The Beach Bar on Tumon Bay. ?After a long day of working we drove down Gun Beach Road just minutes from the Westin Resort. ?At the end of the road there is a large parking area that fronts what looks like a restaurant/bar you would see in Mexico. ?There are volleyball courts and a game where you throw bags filled with sand at a target. ?Both the volleyball courts and bag throwing games were filled with young American soldiers having a much needed break from their duties. ?We entered the large open air hut type structure to find loud music and dozens of soldiers enjoying large amounts of cold beverages. ?Some sat quietly in a daze while others whopped it up like I remember doing in my twenties. These guys were letting loose and they deserve it. ?We looked at the view and walked to the bar. ?Took a few minutes to get the attention of the bartender, but we got a few cold beers and set up at a table near the ocean. ?The music blared and drunk people were all around. ?Took us about two minutes to realize that we were two old guys wearing pants and golf shirts among a platoon of twenty year olds with no shirts. ?I thought about taking my shirt off but quickly shelved that thought after feeling my belly touching the table. ?We finished one beer and left to have dinner. ?The Beach Bar is a great place for the young who want to spend a day drinking. ?The Bar also serves food and even puts on local style Chamorro BBQ's. ?There is plenty of seating under the hut, on the deck and even on the beach where they have placed lounge chairs and seating areas. ?There is an adjacent table area away from the hoopla where you can enjoy a beachfront meal and cocktail. ?I will try dinner here during my next visit to Guam. ?It was great to see the great men and woman who serve our country enjoying a moment on the beach in Guam. ?I could not help but think what hell hole they could be shipped out to in a matter of days, weeks or months. ?This was "there" time to let loose and party on American soil. ?

The Beach is located on the northernmost end of Tumon?s shopping district, just past the Hotel Nikko Guam. Drive straight and follow the signs to the Beach. Located just to the left of Gun Beach, The Beach, offers spectacular, unobstructed sunset views, soothing waves, and the most expansive private beach front on Guam. Hotel pick-up is available and HIS Sirena provides trolley service several times an hour from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.

intercessor adar: omicron antipodal: Why Aerobics Exercise is So

Most people first think of how great they are going to look on the outside if they following an aerobics workout routine, and this is true it will give you an attractive, toned, and fit looking body, that people will admire and even envy.

The main motivation is not the external benefits but rather the internal health derived from a consistent cardio workout, which is coupled with good nutrition.

It has now been scientifically proven that a smoker who does regular and consistent cardio workouts exercises, is healthier than a none-smoker who don?t. This is not an endorsement of smoking of course, but to show how important exercise is for overall optimal health.

So what does aerobics do for my body?

Have a Heart

Well for starts it increases the blood flow hence the oxygen levels in the body, more oxygen means the body will become efficient in caring out its daily function. Increasing the heart rate during aerobics activity will build the muscles of the heart and over time the rest rate of your heart beat will be slower; this is because your heart has become much more efficient in pumping nutrient rich blood around the body, this decrease in heart rate during rest means less wear and tear on the heart.

Once the heart becomes more efficient due to consistent aerobics cardio, oxygen is transported around the body in more volume, more efficiently and this aerobics or oxygenated blood burns fat faster and more efficiently.

Regular aerobics workout will help prevent arteriosclerosis or heart disease and even prevent stroke by strengthening the heart muscle and keeping the arteries elastic and open, this will lower blood pressure and raise your high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels (good cholesterol) and lower your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (bad cholesterol).

Aerobics workout does not burn cholesterol the way we know it burns fat, but what it does is stimulate the blood?s cholesterol levels and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides and increase HDL (good) cholesterol.

Your Brain Will Thank You

Regular cardio vascular workouts such as aerobics increases the ?brain-derived neurotrophic factor? (BDNF). BDNF is believed to play a key role in the regulation of mood. BDNF also help brain cells and neurotransmitters live longer, so exercise can prevent dementia.

Another major chemical produces from the amino acid L-tryptophan in the brain is serotonin or (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). This hormone is a neurotransmitter in the brain and influences a lot of different brain functions. Regular aerobics activity is shown to increase the serotonin levels in the brain.

Serotonin is a critical chemical produces by the brain and influences control over appetite, memory and learning, mood, behavior, depression, sleep, endocrine regulation, temperature regulation, sex drive or the lack there of, cardiovascular function, and muscle contraction. Regular aerobics exercise is key in maintaining proper levels of this very important chemical.

Workout for Your Bone

like muscles bones are alive and ever changing, either for the better or the worst. Aerobics exercise strengthen bones just like it does muscles, stronger bones will reduce your risk of small fracture and weakening of your skeletal structure as you get older, which could lead to osteoporosis. Regular exercise also serves to lubricate the joints and reduce inflammation and prevent arthritis. So increase your bone?s strength and mass with some cardio.

Aerobics for Immunity

It has been shown that regular cardio workouts strengthens the immune system and enable it to fight off sickness and infection. The increased aerobic activity serves to expel airborne viruses and bacteria from the lungs before they have a chance to invade. Rapid blood flow throughout the body and the action of sweating during a workout also rid the body of toxins and certain carcinogens. Built up waste mater is excreted through the sweat glands and urination. That?s why proper hydration is important during a workout.

Antibodies and white blood cells are used by the immune system to fight invaders, regular exercise activities helps to circulate and distribute these fighters throughout the body, reducing the risk of infection and sickness.

So Strengthen, tune and tone your body with aerobics workout exercises, both on the outside but most importantly on the inside.

Staying fit and healthy is not a Fad but rather a lifestyle,

Steve Robertson
