ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? Five men all severely wounded in war, including four who had amputations, had to abandon their climb of North America's tallest peak, but say it was weather and not their disabilities that ended the summit attempt.
The five men descended Alaska's Mount McKinley on Monday. The climb of the 20,320-foot mountain started on June 11.
They spent nine days waiting out weather at the 14,200-foot level. On Saturday, they again attempted to make 16,200 feet, but were turned back by a blizzard.
The expedition was also close to running out of food and time on their climbing permits, factors that led to the decision to end the attempt.
Climber Stephen Martin, 42, isn't calling it defeat; he calls his encounter with Mount McKinley a tie. "I took everything it could give me, we just ran out of time," he said Tuesday by telephone from his home in Phoenix.
There were two double leg amputees and two above-the-knee amputees on the climb. All were wounded in wars from Vietnam to Afghanistan. The climb was organized by Disabled Sports USA and its Warfighter Sports program.
"I can say it is absolutely the most nerve-racking, exciting, exhausting, challenging experience I've ever had," said Kirk Bauer, a climber who is also the CEO of Disabled Sports USA. The Baltimore man lost a leg to a grenade in Vietnam in 1969.
The climb was intended to inspire others who have been or will be wounded in wars that they can still lead active lives.
Even though they didn't summit Mount McKinley he hopes the attempt still sends a strong message to the wounded and disabled to "chose to drive forward to success and not to accept the disability as something that defeats them."
There were worries about what the cold might do to the prosthetics the men were using to climb.
Bauer said they held up surprisingly well. The single-leg amputees needed to constantly recharge batteries that run computers to aid the knee unit since the cold on the mountain zapped their power quickly.
They even brought along solar charges, but were worried how they might act. "When the sun came out, it was so bright that the solar chargers went crazy," Bauer said.
One problem, which was expected, were the pressure sores and abrasions from where the men's artificial limbs met their prosthetics, exacerbated by carrying backpacks weighing up to 70 pounds and pulling a sled with another 60 pounds of gear.
"They take a real beating," Bauer said of the legs.
The group actually made it to the 15,500 foot level before they turned around. It was on the descent back to camp at 14,200 feet when Martin injured himself when his foot got jammed in a hole and was severely twisted.
He tried to sleep off the injury, but could hardly walk the next day.
Guides put him into a large sled and led him down the mountain.
Martin, a retired Army corporal who went back to Afghanistan as a contractor, lost both his legs in a roadside bomb attack.
He said the first day in the sled, going from 14,200 feet to 11,000 feet, was "hell ... terrifying because the conditions were so bad." The snow was 5-to-8 feet deep in spots, and the guide leading him kept sinking into the snow, and they were two feet from the ledge of a cliff. He was in the sled, using his ski poles to help push along on the treacherous part of the mountain, which has claimed six lives this year.
But from 11,000 feet down, he said they were just flying down and said it was "so much fun," reaching rest camps two-to-three hours ahead of everyone else.
Jesse Acosta, 34, the only team member will all his limbs, suffered permanent damage to his back, hip, leg and arm from a roadside bomb in Iraq.
The most difficult part of the climb was having to accept there were a number of elements outside their control, like weather, said Acosta, an Austin, Texas, native working on Wall Street.
"There's a stinging sensation about not making it, but I think we all walked away saying we put in everything we could," Acosta said.
The other members of the team were Marine Capt. David Borden, 31, of Hanover, Pa., the only active duty military member, and Ret. Army Sgt. Neil Duncan, 29, of Denver, the other double amputee.
Bauer, who like Acosta and Duncan, has climbed Tanzania's 19,336-foot Mount Kilimanjaro, said his climbing days are over after the attempt to climb Mount McKinley.
At 64, Bauer is the oldest of the group. He said the younger men, "all said they want to beat this tiger, so stay tuned."
There are no doubts for Martin, who wants to return next year. "I'm going to climb that mountain. I know I can do it."
Acosta isn't counting any of them out, and said there's an absolute desire to return to Mount McKinley.
"I think we're all accepting the fact the mountain isn't going away, and we still have a lot of years left on us, Kirk included, so we'll see where it goes," Acosta said.

Associated PressFAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas coach John L. Smith says he is making plans to declare bankruptcy as a result of several land developments gone bust in Kentucky.
Smith was hired by the Razorbacks in April to replace Bobby Petrino, who was fired after revelations that he had hired his mistress in the football department and given her $20,000 in gifts.
Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long says Smith told him of his financial problems during the hiring process. Long says he is comfortable the issue will not affect Smith's ability to coach Arkansas in the wake of the Petrino scandal.
Smith, also a former head coach at Michigan State and Louisville, says he was a partner in the land deals and that total money involved is in the "multimillions."

GENEVA ? A conference called by special envoy Kofi Annan to end the Syria crisis appeared on the brink of failure as it opened Saturday, with the U.S. and Russia still divided over a role for President Bashar Assad in a transition government.
Annan seemed confident of his plan a few days ago, but Russia has refused to back a provision that would call for Assad to step down to make way for a unity government, a stance that could scuttle the entire deal.
The envoy warned the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council ? Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States ? that if they fail to act at the talks hosted by the United Nations at its European headquarters in Geneva they face an international crisis of "grave severity" that could spark violence across the region and provide a new front for terrorism.
"History is a somber judge and it will judge us all harshly if we prove incapable of taking the right path today," he said.
He appeared to specifically aim his words at Russia, Syria's most important ally, protector and arms supplier, which insists that outsiders cannot order a political solution for Syria. The U.S. is adamant that Assad should not be allowed to remain in power at the top of the transitional government and there is little chance that the fragmented Syrian opposition would go along with any plan that does not explicitly say Bashar must go.
"While many spoke of united support for one ... some simultaneously took national or collective initiatives of their own, undermining the process. This has fueled uncertainty in Syria, in turn fueling the flames of violence," Annan said. "By being here today, you suggest the intention to show that leadership. But can you, can we follow through?"
He said that "the way things have been going thus far ? we are not helping anyone. Let us break this trend and start being of some use."
Foreign ministers were rushed from luxury sedans into the elegant and sprawling Palais des Nations along with their legions of diplomats and aides and envoys from Europe, Turkey and three Arab countries representing groups within the Arab League.
A senior U.S. official ? speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing negotiations ? said the "discussions remain challenging. We're continuing to work this today, but we need a plan that is strong and credible. We may get there, we may not."
The question is still whether Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton can rescue Annan's plan.
Russia and China, which has followed Russia's lead on Syria, have twice used their council veto to shield Syria from U.N. sanctions.
Major regional players Iran and Saudi Arabia were not invited. The Russians objected to the Saudis, who support the Syrian opposition. The U.S. objected to Iran, which supports Assad's regime. Lavrov predicted the meeting had a "good chance" of finding a way forward, despite the grim conditions on the ground.
Syria, verging on a full-blown civil war, has endured a particularly bloody week, with up to 125 people reported killed nationwide on Thursday alone. Since March of last year, the uprising in in one of the world's most unstable regions has killed some 14,000 people.
International tensions also heightened last week after Syria shot down a Turkish warplane, leading to Turkey setting up anti-aircraft guns on its border with its neighbor.
Without agreement among the major powers on how to form a transitional government for the country, Assad's regime ? Iran's closest ally ? would be emboldened to try to remain in power indefinitely, and that would also complicate the U.S. aim of halting Iran's nuclear goals.
At talks Friday night, top U.S. and Russian diplomats remained deadlocked over the negotiating text to agree on guidelines and principles for "a Syria-led transition."
British Foreign Secretary William Hague urged Russia and China, which is following the Russian lead, to join Western nations in speaking with one voice on Syria, though he acknowledged that will be a stiff challenge.
"We haven't reached agreement in advance with Russia and China ? that remains very difficult. I don't know if it will be possible to do so. In the interest of saving thousands of lives of our international responsibilities, we will try to do so," Hague told reporters. "It's been always been our view, of course, that a stable future for Syria, a real political process, means Assad leaving power."
He tweeted that "President Assad and his closest associates cannot credibly lead the process of transition in Syria.
The negotiating text for the multinational conference calls for establishing a transitional government of national unity, with full executive powers, that could include members of Assad's government and the opposition and other groups. It would oversee the drafting of a new constitution and elections.
But the text that would serve as the framework for Annan's peace efforts also would "exclude from government those whose continued presence and participation would undermine the credibility of the transition and jeopardize stability and reconciliation."
"Ultimately, we want to stop the bloodshed in Syria. If that comes through political dialogue, we are willing to do that," said Khalid Saleh, a spokesman for the Syrian National Council, a coalition of Syrian opposition groups based in Istanbul, Turkey. "We are not willing to negotiate (with) Mr. Assad and those who have murdered Syrians. We are not going to negotiate unless they leave Syria."
Clinton said Thursday in Riga, Latvia, that all participants in the Geneva meeting, including Russia, were on board with the transition plan. She told reporters that the invitations made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."
The United Nations says violence in the country has worsened since a cease-fire deal in April, and the bloodshed appears to be taking on dangerous sectarian overtones, with growing numbers of Syrians targeted on account of their religion. The increasing militarization of both sides in the conflict has Syria heading toward civil war.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) ? No posing, no salutes, no fist pumping. Yohan Blake simply paced in front of the jam-packed grandstand at National Stadium and stared up into the crowd, letting all those fans soak in a nice, long look.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the man to beat at the London Olympics.
In a result that can no longer be considered a surprise, Blake beat Usain Bolt in the 200 meters at Jamaican Olympic trials Sunday, finishing in 19.80 seconds to edge the world-record holder by 0.03.
When it was over, Bolt was the first one to approach his training partner and buddy and give him a big bear hug. Moments later, Bolt was down on the ground, getting his right hamstring stretched out, while Blake was celebrating ? rather modestly ? in front of the grandstand.
"A lot of people gave me encouragement, said, 'Yohan Blake, you can do it,'" Blake said. "I just wanted to keep performing and keep going."
The win came two days after Blake, the reigning world 100 champion, beat Bolt in the 100 by running a personal-best 9.75.
That was a shocker, but there were explanations ? most notably the terrible starts Bolt got off to throughout the 100 heats and in the final. Bolt has always considered the 200, which better suits his lanky 6-foot-5 frame, his real work. And indeed, he has work to do there, as well.
As they approached the finish line, Bolt was grimacing ? or was that the hint of a frustrated smile ? as he looked to his left to see what hardly anyone could have imagined earlier this week: Blake beating him to the finish line for the second time in the span of three days.
"I'll have to figure out what I did wrong and work on it," Bolt said.
In the women's 200, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran a personal best 22.10 seconds to also complete the 100-200 sweep. She'll be joined by Sherone Simpson and two-time defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown.
They'll all have some ground to make up. At U.S. trials this weekend, Allyson Felix won the 200 final, also in a personal best of 21.69 seconds.
"I'm happy for Allyson," Campbell-Brown said. "That's a very good time for her. And the faster we run, the sweeter it will be at the Olympic Games, because anyone who wins that will have to run very, very fast."
Same thing for the guys, and for the next four weeks, the guessing game figures to take on Olympics-sized proportions.
Both Blake, Bolt and their coach, Glen Mills, all conceded that Blake came into these trials in better shape than the man whose marks ? 9.58 and 19.19 ? sit atop the record book.
So, was Bolt genuinely just coasting through this weekend in front of all his home fans, making sure he made it, getting ready for something bigger? Is his conditioning not up to snuff, and if so, is there time to get there? Or, might he be hurting, as it appeared when he was getting his leg worked on while lying on the track?
"I don't want to get into that," Bolt said.
Mills, meanwhile, said he wasn't concerned with his star student ? or at least the man who used to be his star student.
"Usain, he has the experience, the ability, he has been there already," Mills said. "He might be a little off at the moment but I'm sure when the time of delivery comes around, he'll be on top of his game."

For Obama, it?s the ACA?s cost to individuals and families of a massive new government program designed to reform health care insurance in major ways, and Republicans were quick to jump on that.
In the GOP?s Saturday radio address, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo. (who?s a physician) said this:
?President Obama has repeatedly promised, and I quote, 'if you're a family making less than $250,000 a year, my plan,' he said, 'won't raise your taxes one penny.' Now, all of America knows the truth. The President's health care law hires more IRS agents to investigate you and to make sure you buy insurance ? but it fails to deal with the shortage of nurses and doctors to actually take care of you.?
The Supreme Court?s majority opinion did say the ACA is constitutional because of Congress?s taxing authority, so that?ll take some explaining by the Obama administration.
What Romney has to explain is why that?s substantially different from his signature achievement as governor of Massachusetts: A statewide health insurance program that includes an individual mandate and the taxing authority to enforce it.
?I don't think of the mandate as a tax ? I think of it is a free rider penalty,? Jon Gruber, the MIT economist who helped craft the Massachusetts and national laws, told Politico.com. ?But if you want to think of it as a tax, then it is exactly the same tax ? Romney imposed.?
Michael Widmer, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation ? a business-backed fiscal watchdog that has analyzed the state?s health care law for years ? agreed, Politico reported. ?If one?s a tax, the other?s a tax,? he said.
