Bathroom-Remodeling-Classes-Are-They-Worth-the-Money ...

Bathroom Remodeling Classes: Are They Worth the Money?

Are you interested in having your bathroom undergo remodeling? Better yet, are you interested in doing that remodeling yourself? If you are, do you have any prior bathroom remodeling or home improvement experience? Although it is possible to successfully complete a bathroom remodeling project without any prior experience, you may find it a little bit difficult to do so. That is why if you are looking to perform your own bathroom remodeling, but you don?t necessarily know what you are doing, you should sign up to take a bathroom remodeling class.

When it comes to bathroom remodeling classes, one of the most asked questions is why. Honestly, there are a number of different reasons why you should take a bathroom remodeling class, which is also commonly referred to a course or a training seminar. Perhaps, the greatest reason why you should take one of these training classes is because of everything that you will learn. What you will learn will all depend on what class you are taking and how it is being taught. Despite the fact that different bathroom remodeling classes are taught different ways, you should learn tips and instructions on how to safely remodel a bathroom.

Now that you know what a bathroom remodeling class, course, or training seminar is, you may want to start searching for one to attend. No matter where you live, you should have access to at least one bathroom remodeling course, but chances are that you will have more than one to choose from. One of the best ways to find a local bathroom remodeling course is by contacting one of your local career centers. Career centers often provided training courses to those who are in need of a job. Although you may not necessarily be looking for a job, you should still be able to attend one of these classes, for a small fee of course. Despite needing to pay a small fee, which is almost always less than one hundred dollars, you can greatly benefit from what you learn at one of these classes.

In addition to contacting one of your local career training centers, you may also want to contact one of your local home improvement stores. In the United States, a large number of home improvement stores, particularly those that operate on a national level, have started hosting do it yourself training courses. These courses often encompass a number of different home improvement projects, but it is quite common to find a kitchen remodeling class being held at one of your local home improvement stores. In most cases, you will find that these courses only last a few hours and tend to focus on one remodeling task at a time; therefore, if you were looking to learn how to remodel your whole kitchen, you may need to take multiple classes. The good news is that most of the classes offered are free or relatively inexpensive to attend.

It is also a good idea to keep an eye on your local newspaper, your local television stations, as well as your local radio stations. In addition to regularly scheduled kitchen remodeling classes, you may also find a remodeling class that is considered a special event. This most often happens when someone famous, such as a well-known contractor, comes into your area. These types of classes are often popular because of who they involve and what they teach you. The only downside to special home improvement classes, especially the ones that are taught by celebrities or an expert in the filed, is their cost. Despite the potentially high cost, you may find it more than worth it to attend one of these home improvement classes, especially if they have a focus on bathroom remodeling.

As nice as it is to participate in a bathroom remodeling training seminar, course, or class, you may not have the time to do so. If that is the case, you are still advised to take the time to learn about bathroom remodeling before you go to work. A nice alternative to a kitchen remodeling training course is a kitchen remodeling book or a how-to guide. These resources can be purchased from most home improvement stores and book stores, for a relatively affordable price.

Musician Doc Watson poses backstage at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, Calif., in this 1986 publicity photo.

By The Associated Press

The manager of Grammy-winning folk musician Doc Watson says the artist has died. He was 89.

Mitchell Greenhill said in a news release that Watson died Tuesday at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. A hospital spokeswoman also confirmed Watson's death.

Watson was a master flatpicker, playing his acoustic guitar at lightning speeds that could intimidate other musicians. The blind musician also sang and played other instruments, including the harmonica.

His many awards include the National Medal of the Arts in 1997 and the lifetime achievement award from the Grammys in 2004. His albums earned seven other Grammys.

Watson was also known for Merlefest, an annual gathering of musicians in Wilkesboro named after his son, who died in a tractor accident in 1985.

Tips On How To Plan For A Wedding

Planning a wedding is an exciting time, but it's very easy to go overboard, and in no time, your expenses could start spiraling out of control. You can do many things to control your wedding budget. This article is packed with useful tips and tricks for planning a magical wedding on a practical budget.

Try something relaxing before your wedding if your time allows. Getting a relaxing massage for about 30 minutes in the morning of your big day is a perfect way to keep yourself feeling great.

If you cannot justify the cost of a thousand-dollar wedding cake, consider contacting a local bakery and inquiring about single-serving portions, like cupcakes or cake pops. Many bakeries can provide wedding cupcakes that come in at 100 calories or less per serving. Other healthier options include gluten-free pastries, no-calorie sweeteners, and icing alternatives, such as meringue or fruit spreads.

Get a wedding planner who can help you get through the whole planning process. Weddings tend to be stressful and many things can go wrong. A professional has seen most of these problems before and can deal with them more effectively than you can. That way your loved ones can enjoy the wedding and the reception with no worries.

Dress any children attending your ceremony in comfortable attire. Dress them in soft, comfortable fabrics that are airy and fit loosely. It's important that any shoes they wear are comfortable, which means new shoes, will need to be broken in. Taking care of these small details will allow children to focus on participation in the wedding instead of fussing with their attire.

Seasonal flowers that are native to your state may not be easy to find at your wedding location, especially if it's a completely different climate. Contact professionals near the destination site to find out which blooms are readily available.

The lighting in your venue should be able to be dimmed. Although this may seem trivial, you want the option of having a low-light setting during your first dance and a more brighter setting for the rest of the celebration. Check out the lighting available at different venues before picking one.

Consider the appearance of your wedding cake when deciding how to display it. For example, if your cake is unusually colorful, match its color to the hue of the fabric underneath it. There are many different styles and options, such as various types of fabrics and textures. It is up to you how to put it all together.

See if you can find a willing helper who can assist you with looking after your equipment and moving it when necessary. They can also be of assistance in rounding everyone up for the group photographs, and this will make sure no one is left out.

Make a detailed itinerary with directions, so guests know when and where the wedding and reception will be held. Inform people of events, like rehearsals, that they are required to attend, so they will be where they are supposed to be at the scheduled time.

Avoid cluttering tables with too many flowers at your reception. Often, flowers interfere with guests being able to converse across the table. Also, some of your guests may have allergies to the flowers. Try putting some scent free candles on your wedding tables.

Place a number of different-sized potted plants throughout the venue in lieu of costly floral arrangements. Use colorful, glazed ceramic pots, or dress up earthy terracotta stoneware with ribbons, decoupage, or decorative paint effects. When the wedding is over, the guests can then take those plants home with them as a favor and have a constant reminder of the new couple.

Trust in others to help you with your wedding plans. It is natural to want to participate in all aspects of planning, especially since your wedding is such a personal affair. You can overdo it though, so you may want a trusted pro who has expertise in this area.

Be sure you have help when trying on wedding dresses. Choose a dress whose style you like but also one that suits your figure. Ask your friend or the sales clerk what they think of it. If you are under 5"4', step away from the normal dress section and make a beeline for the petite dresses. By choosing a gown that is designed for your body type, it will ensure a comfortable fit, making you much happier.

If you want the bride to be happy on her wedding day, it is important that everything meets her standards. Planning the wedding is stressful for the bride, and sub-par results may leave her crushed. In order to prevent your fianc from being upset, ensure that you run everything by her.

If you conduct your wedding in a vacation spot, have a basketful of themed goodies delivered to each guest's room. Useful things that you may include are local attraction pamphlets, a hat, sunglasses, tourist map, and a disposable camera. It may also be nice to give them a guide to a restaurant in the area so they have an easier time finding a place to get food.

Pick out a few special activities for the day, and use them to spice up the mood when needed. Don't just let everyone stand around tapping their feet, waiting for something to happen. Examples of activities could include a volleyball game, or a contest of who can get to know the most people prior to the wedding. You can make your wedding more memorable by planning activities that allow your guests to have fun and interact with each other.

Let your control issues go, and allow your friends and family to get involved in the planning of your wedding. You will more than likely want to control every aspect of your wedding, but it is important to be able to let go of some aspects so that you do not get overly stressed during what should be the happiest time of your life. On the other hand, overdoing it is really possible, and some things are just better left in the hands of expert professionals.

Your assistant will be helping carry equipment around for you so there is no need for them to have any specific photography training. They can help you get group shots of the family too!

Large centerpieces are unnecessary on your tables as they not only eat away at your budget, but serve as an unneeded distraction. Instead of going with a huge table centerpiece that uses up almost the entire table, keep it simple. You do not want your guests to be unable to communicate because there is a large centerpiece in the way.

If not planned well, a joyous wedding occasion can turn disastrous. Follow the advice in this article as you are planning your wedding, and you will see how easy it can be.

Loyola (Md.) beats Maryland 9-3 for lacrosse title

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Top-seeded Loyola of Maryland beat Maryland 9-3 Monday to win the NCAA men's lacrosse title behind Eric Lusby's four goals. Lusby set a record with 17 goals in the tournament.

The Greyhounds captured their first national lacrosse championship and finished the season at 18-1. Maryland (12-6) lost the title game for the second straight year.

Chris Layne added three assists for the Greyhounds, whose only loss this season was to Johns Hopkins in overtime on April 28.

The two Maryland schools are separated by about 30 miles, but it was only their 21st meeting and first since the Terrapins' 19-8 victory in the 1998 national semifinals.

(AP Photo/Matt Slocum, File)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay is expected to miss six to eight weeks because of a strained right shoulder, the latest major setback for the five-time NL East champions.

Halladay was put on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, two days after he was hit hard and pulled from a start in St. Louis after just two innings because of shoulder soreness.

The two-time Cy Young winner will be shut down for a minimum of three weeks, then work toward rejoining the rotation, Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said.

Proefrock said tests done in Philadelphia indicated Halladay doesn't need surgery to recover and that the injury doesn't affect his rotator cuff.

"We hate to have him down, but it's nothing that requires anything other than rest," Proefrock said.

Halladay is 4-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 11 starts. He has pitched at least 220 innings in each of the past six seasons, and four times led the league in innings. His 72 1-3 innings this year tied Houston's Wandy Rodriguez for the NL lead.

The move with Halladay, which came two years to the day since he pitched a perfect game in Florida, was made retroactive to Monday. Catcher Erik Kratz was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Minutes before the injury was announced as a Grade I/Grade II strain of the latissimus dorsi, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he thought Halladay needed a break.

Halladay has "thrown a lot of bullets over his career," Manuel said, suggesting the 35-year-old pitcher could step back for a bit and still be dominant. The durable Halladay had not been on the DL because of shoulder trouble since 2004.

"He's got to get well," Manuel said.

The injury came with the Phillies at 26-24 and tied with Atlanta for last in the division, four games behind Washington.

Philadelphia has managed to stay close minus All-Star hitters Ryan Howard (Achilles tendon) and Chase Utley (knee), who haven't played at all this season. Manuel said he harbored hope that his slugging first baseman and smooth-fielding second baseman would be back at some point this year.

As for Halladay's absence, "it would hurt us," Manuel said. "How much, I really don't know."

The Phillies have relied on their pitching, particularly their rotation, to stick solidly in contention. Vance Worley, who is on the DL and hasn't started since May 11 because of elbow trouble, threw his first bullpen session since the injury before Tuesday's game.

Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, Joe Blanton and Kyle Kendrick remain in the rotation, and there are a few potential replacements at Triple-A, including former big leaguers Dave Bush and Scott Elarton.

Any chance for Philadelphia to sign former Phillies star Roy Oswalt as a possible addition ended when the free agent reached a deal with Texas later Tuesday.

"Yeah, we can always use pitching," Manuel said, while adding, "I'm not telling (GM) Ruben Amaro to get another."

Halladay initially felt discomfort in his shoulder last Tuesday in a start against Washington but worked through it. He cut back on his throwing regimen before his next outing, but was tagged by Yadier Molina's grand slam in St. Louis.

Halladay began the season by throwing eight strong innings in a 1-0 win at Pittsburgh on opening day and seemed fine until blowing a 6-0 lead against Atlanta on May 2. He's 1-3 since then and the Phillies have lost four of his five starts.

The eight-time All-Star came to the Phillies in a trade with Toronto before the 2010 season and got a $60 million, three-year contract. Halladay pitched a perfect game against the Marlins in that first season with Philadelphia, and later that year threw a no-hitter against Cincinnati in his first career postseason outing.

The Phillies won the 2008 World Series and hoped to capture another crown after adding Halladay. But Philadelphia lost to the eventual champion San Francisco Giants in the 2010 NL championship series, then Halladay lost to Chris Carpenter and St. Louis 1-0 in the deciding Game 5 of the 2011 division series.

Japan?s Lay Judge System and the Kanae Kijima Murder Trial

Japan?s Lay Judge System and the Kanae Kijima Murder Trial

Philip Brasor

However one feels about the death penalty, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that its application in Japan is arbitrary. At a mid-April symposium hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to Japan and the EU Institute in Japan at Waseda University in Tokyo, former Justice Minister Hiraoka Hideo publicly denounced his successor Ogawa Toshio 's decision to have three men on death row hanged on March 29, saying that the government needs to discuss the matter more before continuing with executions. The fact that Hiraoka on principle did not sign any execution orders during his tenure while Ogawa, in accordance with a very different set of values, approved three soon after assuming office shows that choices regarding life-and-death are governed by personal whim. Don't forget, these two men belong to the same political party, the ruling DPJ.

At the same symposium, Kaido Yuichi, the secretary general of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, called for a change in judicial rules in relation to the two-year-old lay judge system. At present, a death sentence can be delivered if the majority of the 9 judges?six non-professionals and three professionals?vote in favor of it and one of the majority is a professional judge. The JFBA, which has called on the government to launch a public debate on abolishing the death penalty, says that death sentences should only be validated if the decision is unanimous.

When the lay judge system itself was being debated, one prominent lawyer who opposed it, Takayama Shunkichi, claimed that it was being pushed by the government to "streamline courtroom procedures" so that prosecutors could gain faster convictions, since there were provisions that take into consideration the limited time the average person could spend to sit for a trial. These provisions require judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers to participate in pretrial meetings to determine what will be discussed in court and what evidence is permitted. Takayama said such conditions automatically favor the prosecution, because once the evidence has been determined in the pretrial phase nothing can be changed, added or subtracted. A defendant cannot recant in court a confession he or she may have made under duress. As a practicing defense attorney, Takayama has said that of the twenty-odd cases that he has won over the years, ?none involved trials of less than three years.?

All of these issues were addressed either directly or indirectly during the recent trial of Kijima Kanae, who was convicted of killing three men and sentenced to death. The trial lasted 100 days, making it the longest one since the lay judge system started. More significantly, the prosecution presented only circumstantial evidence, thus forcing the lay judges to not only decide if someone is guilty but also send that person to death row based mostly on conjecture. In contrast, the even more infamous 1998 ?Wakayama curry poisoning,? which also involved a defendant who was convicted and sentenced to death based solely on circumstantial evidence, took four years. There are other parallels. Like Kijima, Hayashi Mayumi remained almost completely silent during interrogations. More significantly, both cases were hallmarked by the media's blanket coverage of the crimes, much of which actually preceded the suspects? arrests. Some reporters who had already been following the Kijima case implied that she was responsible for the deaths of a number of men she had allegedly led on with promises of marriage. At least three of these men died under conditions that looked suspicious: two in identical circumstances involving the use of burning charcoal, and a third in a house fire. The former were initially ruled suicides, the latter an accident. Kijima's initial arrest in 2009 was for fraud, but after the media connected her to the deaths of several men she supposedly had affairs with, she was eventually served arrest warrants for the murders of three. Kijima reportedly took cash from them, and prosecutors cited money as the motive in all three alleged murders, an aspect of the case that the media had covered in lurid fashion as a "black widow" story intensified by a blatantly sexist angle which questioned how such an unattractive woman could be so successful as a gold digger. By the time the trial started last January everyone in Japan with access to a TV or broadband connection knew the tale and most were likely convinced of her guilt.

Sensational coverage of the ?black widow?, using a high school photograph of Kijima Kanae

In April, NHK ran a special hour-long program about the trial. According to the law, lay judges cannot discuss afterward what they talked about in closed chambers, even with family, so in order to get some idea of what might have taken place the producers found six people who had served as lay judges in the past and provided them with court records and materials. They used these materials and their experience to recreate what the lay judges at the Kijima trial might have gone through before reaching their guilty verdict and death sentence.

All six agreed that the real lay judges in the case had their work cut out for them since the prosecution's entire argument rested on three pieces of circumstantial evidence and a motive that made sense but had to be inferred since there was no confession. The mock lay judges went through each item with tortured thoroughness. The two men who the defense claimed committed suicide had died from asphyxiation caused by charcoal stoves. Prosecutors say that Kijima drugged them and lit the stoves herself. They claimed that the fact that one of the victims did not have charcoal on his hands when he was found dead proved that he didn't kill himself because he obviously hadn't handled any charcoal. But the mock judges surmised that if he had killed himself he could have wiped his hands prior to lighting the charcoal. Prosecutors also submitted as evidence surveillance camera footage showing that Kijima visited the home of the third victim hours before his house burned down. The man was killed in the fire and the prosecution's claim was that she started it. The mock judges didn't see how the footage decisively showed a connection between Kijima's visit and the fire.

They eventually reached the conclusion that the prosecution's case was based on a very sloppy police investigation, but that didn't necessarily mean they didn't buy it, because the motive put forth by the prosecution had become too easy to believe: Kijima had extracted money out of these men on the false pretense that she might marry them and once they found out she wouldn't they would surely demand the money back, so she killed them. NHK did not mention the media's role in planting this notion in the public's mind over a two-year period, but the prosecution's closing argument exploited the notion with a metaphor: When you wake up in the morning and see snow on the ground where there was none the day before, you know for a fact that it snowed during the night. In other words, the judges should know just by looking at all the circumstances in the case what happened. They don't really need anyone to prove it.

In the end, the mock judges assumed that the lay judges who actually tried the case had reached their conclusion because something had nudged them "out of the gray area" presented by the evidence and into a "black area" of a conviction. What provided that nudge they couldn't guess, though film director Suo Masayuki, who acted as a commentator on the program, implied that the professional judges "who have everyday experience in this situation" may have been the decisive factor. In essence, the pre-trial publicity had placed the burden of proof on the defense attorney, who had to show that his client didn't murder the three men. As far as the death sentence went, the mother of one of the victims was allowed to testify during the trial, and she asked for the harshest possible punishment.

The conclusion reached by the show?s commentators was that there are still problems with the lay judge system but that its value as a platform for judicial participation has been proven, if only by the dedication that lay judges have demonstrated. Nevertheless, NHK had illustrated the confusion that lay judges feel when confronted with the responsibility of interpreting the law and deciding a person's fate. They are told definitively that they must only consider the facts presented to them, but they are also encouraged to go with their gut, to reach a verdict based on which story they think is the most plausible. Was the prosecution's narrative more believable than the defense's? One of the mock judges, remembering the real trial she judged last year, a trial that ended with the accused sentenced to death, broke down in tears because she didn't know anything for sure. Jurors are told they shouldn't convict if there is a shadow of a doubt, but for the mock judges the entire process was darkened by doubt.

At the end of the program NHK interviewed one of the real lay judges in the Kijima case. He wasn't allowed to discuss the decision in detail but admitted it had been "difficult to make a clear judgment." And in the end there was "no option but to convict. We did what we were supposed to do."

Doctor Whooligan: Matt Smith Carries The London 2012 Olympic Torch

I guess Matt Smith is a morning person. The Eleventh Doctor was up very early this morning but it was not to fight Daleks or save the universe. It was to carry the Olympic Torch on its eighth day of travels to the Olympics. Today the torch is traveling 115 miles from Cardiff to Swansea.

The Doctor accepted the torch at around 6:20 am.?Smith was clearly moved by the turnout of nearly a thousand people who came to see him carry the flame and also felt incredibly honored to be a part of the festivities.

Smith clearly understands that the honor bestowed upon him is bigger than?Doctor Who. He also was clearly having a great time. And why not after all David Tennant only got to carry the Olympic Torch on TV (In Fear Her.)

Smith was interviewed about the honor. It appeared in The Sun.

I would do it in my underpants. It?s the Olympic torch. I would probably get a bigger crowd for that.

Interviewed by BBC Wales Smith beamed with excitement.

It?s a great privilege. I can?t believe the number of people who turned up. I thought I would just be waving to the ducks.??It?s strange really, it?s the Olympic torch ? it?s one of those strange occasions in your life that you don?t expect to happen.?It?s a huge privilege and one that?s unexpected.

Smith added that like the Doctor he wasn?t quite sure where he was going.

I don?t even know where I am running to. I try and run in a straight line.

Offscreen this is one of the most important moments ever for Doctor Who.?It emphasizes the mythos and popularity of the program in the English culture.

Blacks, Gays And The Church: A Complex Relationship

Blacks, Gays And The Church: A Complex Relationship
Corey Dade ("NPR," May 22, 2012)

USA - Fairly or not, African-Americans have become the public face of resistance to same-sex marriage, owing to their religious beliefs and the outspoken opposition of many black pastors.

Yet the presence of gays and lesbians in black churches is common. And the fact that they often hold leadership positions in their congregations is the worst kept secret in black America.

While many black pastors condemn gays and lesbians from the pulpit, the choir lofts behind them often are filled with gay singers and musicians. Some male pastors themselves have been entangled in scandals involving alleged affairs with men.

"Persons who are in the closet serve on the deacon boards, serve in the ministry, serve in every capacity in the church," the Rev. Dennis W. Wiley, pastor of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ in Maryland, says of black churches. Wiley is a prominent advocate of gay marriage. "I do believe a certain hypocrisy is there."

President Obama's recent announcement that he supports same-sex marriage turned the spotlight on reservations many blacks harbor about gay rights. Most polls show African-Americans evenly divided about gay marriage, but the vocal opposition, led by preachers, has gained more attention.

"This particular decision I find appalling, and I could not disagree with the president more on it," the Rev. Patrick Wooden, senior pastor of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ in North Carolina, said on NPR's All Things Considered. Wooden helped lead the recent campaign that outlawed gay marriage in his state.

Last week, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People passed a resolution endorsing same-sex marriage as a civil right to be protected by the U.S. Constitution.

Churches Reap Benefits

Some say pastors' hostility cuts hard against the history of how countless black churches have flourished. The virtuosity of gay singers, musicians and composers has been the driving force in developing popular gospel choirs ? even chart-topping, Grammy-winning acts ? that make money for a church, help expand congregations and raise the profiles of pastors.

It all happens under an unspoken "don't ask, don't tell" custom that allows gay people to be active in the church, though closeted, and churches to reap the benefits of their membership.

Some say the arrangement is not only hypocritical, but exploitative.

"On the one hand, you're nurtured in the choir but you also have to sit through some of those fire and brimstone sermons about homosexuality being an abomination," says E. Patrick Johnson, an openly gay gospel singer and author of Sweet Tea: An Oral History of Black Gay Men of the South.

"But a lot of these choirs or choir directors, or ministers of music, will not be open about their sexuality for fear of repercussion from their pastors and church members, but they allow the church to exploit their talent," says Johnson, also a Northwestern University professor whose expertise includes black studies and sexuality.

Johnson and others believe that modern gospel music itself is largely defined by the artistry of black gay men.

Bishop Yvette Flunder of Oakland, Calif., is openly gay and the founder of The Fellowship, an organization of black pastors and churches openly welcoming of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members. Flunder once said during a 2010 interview that gospel choirs "always" have been havens for LGBT people: "In our indigenous expression, that wasn't a problem. It was Christianity that demonized gay people."

As Johnson puts it, "You can't throw a shoe back through history without hitting gay and lesbian women and even transgender singers."

Johnson describes church choirs as a welcoming community within a community "where you meet other gay people, so it becomes a form of socializing."

Commentator Keith Boykin, who is African-American and gay, calls it a paradox: "The church might be the most homophobic and most homotolerant of any institution in the black community."

Wooden, the pastor in North Carolina, agrees that the presence of gays and lesbians in choirs or other church ministries reveals the "duplicity and, frankly, the hypocrisy of the black church. ... The thing that troubles me is these people are almost taken advantage of. As long as they can sing, people look the other way."

However, Wooden insists "we are not all homophobic." He says he welcomes members of the LGBT community to worship at his church. He says his church also has continued to support gay members who have contracted HIV/AIDS, unlike some other churches that ostracize them ? a practice many people on both sides of the issue say has been common.

But that's where Wooden's self-described sense of fairness ends. He forbids LGBT people from participating in the choir or any other church ministries.

"If you love them ? truly love them ? you will tell them the truth on the front side," Wooden says. "We believe homosexuality is a sin. Those who serve, you want their lifestyles to uphold the standards of the church. This is not limited to homosexuals or lesbians. If I know an individual is committing adultery or living with a member of the opposite sex who they're not married to, they can't serve either."

Consequences, Whether Closeted Or Out

A small but growing number of churches, such as the Rev. Wiley's and Flunder's City of Refuge United Church of Christ, publicly welcome LGBT members, and their ranks are swelling with people leaving intolerant churches.

But many others say they are torn between their allegiance to their churches, which form the cultural and institutional backbone of black communities, and their desire to live free of homophobia. They often chose the former, convinced that their sexuality is a sin.

"They would rather suppress their identity than denounce their church," says Sharon J. Lettman-Hicks, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition, an LGBT advocacy group. "I've seen people refuse to divorce themselves from their church in spite of the ignorance that spews from the pulpit. ... It's their way of repenting. They victimize themselves through self-oppression."

Gospel music superstar and megachurch pastor Donnie McClurkin shocked the non-gospel world years ago by revealing in a 2001 book that God "delivered" him from a gay "lifestyle" that he said was a result of being sexually abused as a boy.

McClurkin, who has said being gay is a choice, was criticized by the gay community for setting back the LGBT goal of gaining acceptance.

When gospel music star Tonex (Anthony Charles Williams II) came out in 2009, the gospel music world turned on him, and his record sales plummeted. He left his family church, where he'd been a pastor, and reinvented himself as B. Slade, now a favorite in the LGBT music scene.

Rise Of Black Homophobia: Morality Turns Political

For decades, black ministers addressed LGBT people in their sermons only occasionally. This was true even as HIV/AIDS began claiming the lives of numerous African-American men in black churches, especially gospel singers in the early 1990s.

By 2004, a number of high-profile black ministers emerged as outspoken opponents of same-sex marriage as part of their alignment with the conservative Christian movement, which helped re-elect President George W. Bush that year. Black ministers and black lawmakers helped pass gay marriage bans in several states. In exchange, ministers received federal funds for their community programs through Bush's faith-based initiative.

In 2006, the National Black Justice Coalition held its first Black Church Summit in Atlanta, at which the Rev. Al Sharpton became the highest-profile pastor to denounced homophobia and call for greater inclusion of LGBT people.

Pastors No Strangers To Gay Sex Scandals

The sexual behavior of some male pastors, many of them also gospel singers, also has stoked rumors or led to scandal.

Bishop Eddie Long, the leader of one of the nation's largest black churches, in suburban Atlanta, was sued in 2010 by three young men who claimed Long coerced them into sexual relationships. Long denied the accusations and the cases were settled out of court.

The controversy was all the more notable because Long was a prominent supporter of Georgia's gay marriage ban, passed in 2004, and a proposed U.S. constitutional ban. He rankled many civil rights veterans when he and the Rev. Bernice King, a daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King (who supported gay marriage), led a march to protest same-sex marriage that started at the King family crypt.

"Some of my colleagues protest too greatly," Wiley says.

Prior to the accusations against Long, most controversies rarely escaped mention inside black communities and gospel music circles.

The Bay Area in the 1970s had arguably the most visible presence of LGBT members in black churches, just as the broader gay rights movement had gained momentum in the region. The Love Center Church in Oakland, Calif., founded by the late Bishop Walter Hawkins, one of gospel music's biggest stars in the 1970s and 1980s, made waves for welcoming black gays and lesbians.

Following the 1991 death of the Rev. James Cleveland, the gospel music legend still regarded as the "king" of the genre, a male member of Cleveland's choir sued his estate claiming that he contracted HIV due to his five-year sexual relationship with the singing icon. The lawsuit was settled out of court.

Strategies For Success In A Home Business | Internet Marketing for ...

Search engine optimization might be a valuable way for you to maximize the effectiveness of your home business online site. High rankings are the key to attracting potential customers to your website. There are many strategies that can improve your rankings, so try to find what works best for you.

When you operate a business from your home, you?re going to be getting a great deal of phone calls. You?ll need to spend some money on a second phone line to handle your business traffic. By having an additional phone, you?ll be able to silence it when you aren?t available.

Remember that when you work from home, it isn?t hard to lose the separation between home life and work life. Designate a specific area that will be exclusive to business activity and keep it separate from leisure and family space.

Look into safety standards laws, and make sure that your home business passes. This is especially important if you have kids. It may be that you need to purchase safety equipment and enforce regulations regarding access. Taking the proper steps will keep both your business and your family from unforeseen accidents. Even home businesses are subject to inspection.

Among the best ways of making sure that the home business you start is as profitable as it can be, is to mount a successful online marketing campaign. You can write articles, start a blog, join a forum or start out by sending emails. All of these methods are great ways to increase awareness of your business, leading to increased customers and profits.

Your family and friends need to know that they should not disturb you when you are attempting to work. If a friend or relative likes to interrupt your day unannounced, let them know that you are busy working at the moment. If they arrive during your work hours, ask them to go somewhere else in the house and read a magazine or watch television until it?s your break time.

Always look toward the future. While celebrating recent successes is important, you should recognize that these events are over, and you should always look forward. You should be focusing on what will happen tomorrow or even next week. This will help you to prepare for any future opportunities or possible obstacles along the way. That way, you won?t be blindsided by something you weren?t looking for.

Have some business cards made up. There are many websites online that offer free or inexpensive business card printing services. Be sure to include key information like your full name, phone number and company name. Include your business?s email address and the URL of your website on the business card. This makes it easier for customers to contact you in different ways.

Take care to select a name that has meaning. Since your name will represent your products, you need to have a name which is recognizable and easy for customers to remember. You can choose a name which carries a funny or enlightening story with it. As an added bonus, building a brand will help ensure customer loyalty.

Get incoming payments deposited into your account immediately upon receipt. Instead of making a weekly or monthly bank deposit, make deposits daily or weekly. Keeping a check around longer makes it more likely it will be lost. Use tellers instead of ATMs to make sure the money goes into your account.

Locate your customers and find ways to reach them. Customers exist both online and in a real market. Have a booth set up at community events or organize a sale in a certain area.

You should ensure your paperwork is always organized, it is easier to locate contracts and other important documents when you need them. You should keep any business contracts you have with outside companies close at hand to refer to in case of a problem or disagreement.

Allow people to get in touch with you via phone, mail or email. Organize your customers and track which ones purchased your products after making an inquiry. Perhaps your content had an influence on their buying decisions, and if you can find out from them what worked, you can use this more in the future.

Stay away from wasting time and socializing on social media, and use your time wisely for marketing your business instead. Socializing online will surely waste a great deal of time and is easy to do. Get on Facebook only after you get off work.

A user-friendly and attractive website that sells your product is an essential part of of your home business. This can get the word out about your business to a larger crowd of people, and consequently deliver many new customers. Use a professional service to set up your website.

Don?t start a home business without having a solid understanding of everything that it?s going to take to make it successful. Check into every aspect of what it means to run a home based business.

There are a lot of people that want to launch a business from their homes. However, getting a home business started is hard if you don?t know what you are doing.

Texas farmers use business wile to weather drought

ELKHART, Texas (AP) ? Linda Galayda hauled water and flagged down truck drivers to ask about their hay. She sold calves and young cows and made her son leave their East Texas family ranch for a job in San Antonio.

About 200 miles to the southwest, Bob and Darlene Stryk heeded lessons from a dry spell 16 years ago and kept their 130-year-old farm afloat by selling higher-priced, specialty products like raw milk and cheddar cheese before the drought forced them to make their most difficult decision yet.

The drought that parched the vast Texas landscape, sucking dry ponds, lakes and reservoirs and severely damaging soil and grasslands, traumatized farmers and ranchers, who ? like their ancestors who survived the Dust Bowl and the dry spell of the 1950s ? will tell tales about the drought for generations.

The drought of 2011 cost $7.6 billion in crop losses, the most ever recorded, and forced ranchers to slaughter millions of animals, cutting Texas' cattle herd to its smallest size since 1952.

Now, as they try to recover and plan for the future, Galayda and Stryk share their stories, offering a peek at life during the worst one-year drought in Texas history.

___

For months, Galayda lived in constant fear for her "girls," the herd of cows that hark back to her late father. There was no grass or hay. Two springs that flowed even during a decade-long dry spell in the 1950s ? which serves as Texas' drought barometer ? dried up. Wildfires raged just two miles from the rolling hills of the 7-7 Ranch in Elkhart.

Even now, after the fires are out, Galayda's hand clenches when she talks about the helplessness and all-consuming fear of knowing an uncontrollable blaze could rip across the 2,500 acres she ranches, destroying generations of work.

"We've all heard stories about droughts of years past, but this one was," Galayda pauses, searching for the perfect word.

"Awful."

It took every ounce of business acumen ? much of it acquired during the 25 years she pounded the New York pavement in stilettos as a vice president at today's Macys ? to make it through last winter with a herd.

This time, instead of designer heels, Galayda wore Wranglers and cowboy boots when executing her carefully conceived business plan. First, before the spring of 2011, she looked over the livestock. Cows that weren't pregnant, heifers ? or young females ? with the smallest deficiency and other any less-than-perfect bovine was sold.

In the spring, excessive wind sucked the last moisture from the soil. The rain stopped. Grass disappeared. And there was no hay in Texas.

"I actually flagged down trucks that were carrying quality hay ... and asked them 'Where's this hay coming from?'" Galayda said with a laugh, recalling how she stopped drivers bringing hay to her neighbors to see if she couldn't get some as well.

Trucks rolled in, sometimes in the dead of night. Galayda's husband, Gary, unloaded bales at 4 a.m. The entire family ? sons Christopher and Scott Crawford, and his wife, Rebekah, pitched in. The ranch spent all the cash reserves, about $140,000, to buy hay. Scott dipped into his savings. Christopher got a job in San Antonio.

The family got rid of more animals, losing money as calves were sold early and at lower-than-normal weight. Heifers normally used to restock were also sold.

By August, the heat was so intense, with weeks of 100-degree days with no rain, that Galayda and two cowboys began work at 4:30 a.m., relying on their horses to get them through the pitch black safely. They moved cows to smaller pastures, trying to decrease the distance the animals had to walk to hauled-in water. By 10:30 a.m., it was too hot to work.

"The cows were grazing at night ... if they grazed at all," Galayda said.

Finally, in January, it rained. The creeks, ponds and lake refilled. The cows gave birth. The grass grew green.

Things were different, though. Some calves came later. A few got sick. The vet blamed anything odd on the drought.

"Everything was just not as it normally is," Galayda said. "You can help her (a cow) so much, but nothing, nothing takes the place of green grass."

This spring, the rain has slowed. Galayda's herd is smaller ? down to about 370 head from a pre-drought high of 500 ? but she is cautious, not yet ready to restock. The land, she believes, needs to heal. She does, too.

"I don't think anybody's back in a position yet to say this is over with."

___

On the Stryk Jersey Farm, in Engle, Texas, the situation also was tense.

By fall, the hay barn was empty ? a first in Darlene and Bob Stryk's 26-year marriage. And the pond was mud, also a first since the Stryk family purchased the farm in 1882.

Every three or four days, they filled a 1,500-gallon water tank for the heifers. Each time, they prayed the well wouldn't dry up too.

They already knew drought.

It nearly ran them out of business in 1996. Then, hay was expensive, and milk was cheap. Darlene Stryk took a "town" job, wandering around the state with a cow in a truck, teaching children about dairy operations. Bob Stryk worked as a mechanic. Their debt was enormous. Something had to change, or all would be lost.

They cut their herd from 140 dairy cows to 25 and launched Strykly Texas Cheese, covering blocks of cheddar shaped like Texas, jalapenos and cowboy boots with wax by hand to fill gift baskets. As the business grew, they gradually built their herd back up to 60 head.

A neighbor's bull jumped the fence, and a small beef herd was born.

Each year, though, milk sales failed to cover the animals' feed costs, and they had to transfer money from the burgeoning cheese business to make up the difference. So, in 2006, they got a state license to sell raw, or unpasteurized, non-homogenized milk, to a niche market of people often interested in organic products and buying directly from farms.

Despite the health risks associated with drinking unpasteurized milk, which can contain harmful bacteria, the Stryks were confident in their business plan. They drink their own milk and undergo rigorous state inspections to keep their license.

Within three years, the Stryks, able to earn about double by selling directly to consumers rather than wholesalers, stopped selling to large dairies. They started making their own cheese. They sold grass-fed beef.

Then, in 2010, the rain stopped again. Grass dried up, and hay prices skyrocket. It was time, again, to decide.

"We had to sell all our beef cattle because it was either feed the Jerseys, who were able to produce milk daily and give us financial security, versus a beef herd, which you only sell a calf once a year," Darlene Stryk explained.

A week later, it rained.

"And basically, it's been raining ever since," Darlene Stryk said with a touch of irony. "We rolled the dice, and Mother Nature won once again."

Now, the pastures are green. The creeks are full, but the land is still fragile. Cattle prices are rising, and they too aren't yet willing to invest in a beef herd that will cost more than the one they sold.

They are thankful for the steady sales of raw milk and cheese that saved them. It was, they believe, customer loyalty, the intimacy created when people buy their product directly from the farm, that kept them afloat this time.

"We would not be in the dairy business if it had not been for the retail raw milk permit," Stryk explained.

And so, they wait, and heal along with the land.

Supreme Court limits reach of 1974 real estate law

Supreme Court limits reach of 1974 real estate law

Thu May 24, 2012

(Reuters) ? Supreme Court on Thursday made it harder for home buyers to sue mortgage lenders for certain overcharges at settlement, limiting the reach of a provision of a 1974 federal law on real estate settlement procedures.?

The Supreme Court?s unanimous ruling was a defeat for three couples in Louisiana, who claimed that Quicken Loans overcharged them as much as $1,100 at their mortgage closings for a ?loan discount? or ?processing? fee. The borrowers claimed they received nothing for the fee.

?

The Detroit-based privately held company has denied charging unearned fees in the three residential mortgage loans in 2007, and has said it never will charge such fees. It has said the claims in the lawsuit were baseless.

?

The opinion, written by Justice Antonin Scalia, upheld an appeals court decision for Quicken in the dispute.

?

At issue was a provision in the law that generally barred lenders for collecting fees for settlement services they do not perform. Scalia said the provision only applied when a settlement service provider split the fee with another party in the transaction.

?

The American Bankers Association, the National Association of Realtors, title companies and other settlement service providers supported Quicken before the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court case is Freeman v. Quicken Loans, No. 10-1042.
