Carson-Newman is now a university

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- There's a name change for an East Tennessee higher education institution.
Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City became Carson-Newman University on Monday.
The Citizen Tribune (http://bit.ly/XX2s7s ) of Morristown reported there will be a semester-long celebration of the name change and what it signifies.
There will be sealing of a time capsule at 7 p.m. Monday in Gentry Auditorium. Student Government Association President Devin Gosnell said the university wants students a century from now to know what Carson-Newman College was.
The date of Feb. 11 was chosen for the name change because it was on that date in 1851 that the Baptist Educational Society of East Tennessee appointed William Rogers and C.C. Tipton to raise funds for the first building. Rogers was the college's first president. Classes began in September 1851.
